Where are we ?

Spent Saturday night anchored near Orford (cuckolds point). V pretty. Blowy sail back this afternoon though!

I've always wanted to anchor in Butley Creek as it's really quiet and pretty - but I've never had the nerve. We nosed in a couple of years ago and it seemed so narrow that I was worried that we'd ground if we were even slightly blown over the shallows instead of lying solely to the tide.

We backed out again and found our usual spot - where we were this weekend - right near the corner at cuckolds point - we choose the exact spot on the bend depending where the wind's coming from...

Hello,
It is indeed the Butley river and we were anchored inbetween the resident catamaran fishing boat and the ferry stagings.

I understand what you mean about the depth however we went in about two hours before high and following the South side of the channel we had no less than two meters of water dropping to four meters between the Boydon dock building and the ferry stagings. I set the anchor alarm to 1.5m and it did not go off. We all have our own methods of anchoring and I did drag on our first stay making us realise that in a blow we needed a bigger anchor now having a 20 kg Bruce so we set that and then row out a 10 kg kedge from the stern which holds us in line with the channel. It really is the most peaceful place to be and we are back within the next cpl of weeks.
The Ore entrance was ok and I guess I must say ok there was not quite the water that I was expecting. Going out at H/W -2 I followed a fishing boat and he went South of Oxley so like a good sheep I followed him (stemming the tide so slowly) and found deeper water to the South of the buoy at least 20 m off it so I did a bit of a weave across Oxley and yes his local knowledge ruled but hey ho that could change. I happily kept the track on my plotter. Did not read less than 2m mind.
Just to mention that we also found a bit of a shallow spot where Barthorps creek enters the river nothing less than 2m but impressive on the sounder.

All the best, Col.

you're right about the bit where Barthorps Creek enters the river - we draw 2.1m and my heart was in my mouth for a while on the way out on Sunday - we draw 2.01m and saw 0.4m on the readout which, that close to the beach, is definitely not good for the blood pressure!

We anchored in the Butley River on Monday last week just downstream of the resident catamaran fishing boat. Colin's idea of a stern anchor would have been a good idea. At 2am (HW+2ish) I awoke to driving rain and a lot of wind - popped my head up to check all was OK to find that the shift from SW to SE had swung us towards the steep-to western bank which we were almost touching - we can take the ground but it would have been an uncomfortable angle so a quick reset of the anchor and all was OK.

Had fun with our first visit to Iken Cliffs (0.9m on the sounder a few times), arrived to find no less than 4 yachts anchored just off the beach so we went a bit further up just around the next bend. For coming back the next day I scoured these forums for advice and found the excellent suggestion of overlaying a satellite image (taken at low tide) on the Navionics chart plotter app which worked a treat.

Concur with the above comments about the Ore being shallow near Barthorps Creek. We went out at HW-3 on Friday and saw around 1.5m there. Once past that there were no worries, never saw less than 3m following the imaginary curve from Weir to Oxley and beyond.
