I want to buy a couple of mercruiser 1.7d (cummins engine with mercruiser alpha drives), Ive looked at the UK & USA prices but Ive been told the package is of European origin and obviously Id like to get a price from the country of origin as it may be cheaper!

Does anybody know where they are made?

The 1.7 merc oil burner is based loosely on the vauxhall lump. Which in turn is actually from another origin. I seem to vaguely remember someone on here retro fitting one to replace a couple of petrols. For the life of me can't think who it was!!

My understanding is that the 1.7 TDi Mercruiser engines are based on the Isuzu lump. Now as far as i know these are not even offered by Cummins in the States so I'm wondering if they are something that has been developed by Mercruiser Europe to satisfy the Europeans desire for diesels.

When recently looking in the States, the price of diesel engines was very high particularly when compared to the Gas equivalent.

If buying new you may be best to source from UK to get warranty and local installation. Great little engines though.

UK prices circa £8.5k each / usa prices $9.5k = quite a difference (plus of course freight import duty and Vat)

A Uk source said cheaper in Europe where they are made, but would not say where hence my enquiry.

Try this Mike...

Cummins Engine Co Ltd Royal Oak Way South, Royal Oak Industrial Estate Daventry NN11 5NU (Road Map) Tel 01327 886000. Fax 01327 886100...

Mind you the block could be anything GM, Perkins, theres so much intertrading
between engine builders these days.
Latest D series Volvos use perkins lumps for instance...

Hope it helps

Steve.

According to IBI magazine, a European Sales office under the name of Cummins Mercruiser Diesel Europe (CMD-E) was set up in October in Bordeaux. Can't see a contact number for them but I am sure they would tell you where the engines are made.

The 1.7 is Isuzu

Manufactured at Isuzu's Poland plant and it is sold in the US. The bigger ex Mercuiser diesels are from VM Italy and everything else is Cummins (B- and C-series made in Rocky Mount NC with UK ones assembled in one of the UK plants)

Re: The 1.7 is Isuzu

Thanks for all the responses , my researches confirm Kim was spot on with the answer. I have yet to find published prices on any Euro sites tho!

Last month Keypart were selling the Mercruiser D1.7 (120hp) with an Alpha 1 drive etc for £6450.00.

It's an Isuzu motor, much favoured by white van man!

Thanks Barry,

I'm gone (almost!) but not forgotten (Yet!)

Yes I was the one, that took out two and put in one.

As Kim said, Poland seem to make most of the D120, but it came from numerous sources, some bits from Germany, some from Italy, some from Japan, and some USA. Many engine parts still had the ISUZU brand visible.
