My galley locker was getting damp so i have taken off the whole front panel to get a better look and insulate etc.

Water coming in through the jib track I think. And the chain plate.

Resealing the jib track looks easy enough now I have access. Any suggestions as to what I should seat it with?

The chain plate looks a bit grim. Stainless bolts with steel nuts? Bit of a surprise. Water getting in here to so I'll slack off and rebed.

That is good advice
Change with new if suspect + + +

Butyl tape is a great sealant for above the waterline (i.e., deck fittings).

It is waterproof, always remains flexible, and can even be reused! Ideal for stressed applications like chainplates.

If it does ouse out a bit it is easy to remove.

As alreay said, area needs to be dry before application.

May not be so useful in a tropical climate.

Thanks. I have some butl. When it stops raining I will rebed. I asked about it because I read somewhere that butl can be messy but makes sense to use somethi g that stays flexible on track. I will remove chain plate bolt and have a good look with microscope for crevices. I'll buy some stainless nuts. Cheers.

Take out and examine any fastening that looks like this.

Very likely to be suffering from crevice corrosion and close to the point of failure !

That welded fitting, never mind the fasteners, looks terminal. RIP
New masts are expensive

The tape is easy to use and not messy at all, quite the opposite. I sometimes use a mixture with this:

Adshead Ratcliffe ArboAdshead Ratcliffe Arbo Arbomast BR Butyl Sealant -

Very messy in use and stringy but I like the stickiness.

.

New stainless bolts too, as its these that may be sufferring both crevice corrosion, and stress corossion from the rig loads. Not too expensive to replace in the big scheme of things.

If possible countersink the holes. Allows the sealant to form a bead round the bolts, etc.
