the Admiralty charts are useless for the humber, they never detail up to date sandbanks, they have moved before the Charts get distributed. alright to grimsby Marina but passed that you need the black and white charts which are issued every 1- 3 months.

in answer to the original post question, 2008, purchased admiralty tough charts, you can write on them, wipe off your errors, you can get them soaked and they don't fall apart, but they are expensive compared to paper.

Your a lot braver than I am to navigate by soundings.
(snip) I find soundings are unpredictable at speed.
Does anyone check depth on a chart as a quick fix check ?

I am also a twin keeler, so have been known to navigate by "feel" in unmarked channels that have not been surveyed for 100 years plus. It is very muddy & fine sand around my bit of the N Wales coast, e/s is very useful for ditch creeping & picking the best spot for anchoring for a spot of lunch.

I buy a new chart of my area every year: the Westerschelde, like th lower Thames, changes every year, your chart is out of date after a month due to the sandbars moving. The markers buoys are changed every year.
And the buy one new for an adjacent area. So my main charts rotate every 4 years. The old ones go to the sea-scouts for practice

I went for the tough chart option last year.
Now I know that they are not to the same scale as the leisure folios etc but is it my imagination or are they less detailed?

Just bought every paper chart between Southhampton and Malta Plus two almanacs. Boat will have two Gps systems and radar and sat coms. So did the one which took a wave in the bay of Lions ripping every ariel from the Boat. also drenshing the upper helm GPS so bad that it closed down taking with it through the link the lower helm as well. mmmmmmmmm Mid bay of Lions no nav kit. Paper chart and hand held GPS.. Made Bandol. recon would have made the bottom of the bay of Lions if we had not been carrying a hand held GPS and a good set of charts.
I would never go to sea without a full set of charts and always carry a hand held on all crossings over 50 miles. what ever the GPS systems cost.
Full charts on every trip and also full charts on all clients boats. charter boats etc.
