I’ve just read an old thread, which prompted this. I have tiller steering on my boat and have no problems using it; indeed it is a pleasure. I drive a car, which you will all know has a wheel, to work every day a round trip of forty miles plus the weekend trip to the coast, another hundred. Until recently I drove buses and coaches, which have big wheels, nine hours a day and apart from a slight altercation with a Honda Accord in Cherry Hinton, no problems. So why is it whenever I’m trusted with the helm on a friends Moody 42, which has a very big wheel, and he says turn to starboard, I slip into tiller mode and turn to port?

Ho ho!

I've observed this when seeing people go from tiller to wheel. Imagine that the tiller is attached to the bottom of the wheel and you'll do right every time.

I have exactly the same problem when trying to use wheel steering. I asked Vauxhall for a tiller-steering option on the new car, but apparently they don't offer it - clearly getting too upmarket for their own good.

in the navy until quite recently an order of port helm meant move the helm (i.e. tiller) to port which meant turning the wheel to starboard. you must be behind the times.

Or bang up to date when using the wheel - except I'm going to put the boat on the beach and the skipper, who has steadied himself to turn one way only for it to turn the other over the side that he has asked me turn to - which all leaves me...

Confused

I had a charter boat once where the wheel helm lines had been reversed and the wheel worked contrary to expectations.. Fun reversing out in a crowded marina.

I ask guests used to a tiller to steer holding the lower part of the wheel. Sometimes seems to help ... sometimes not.

I'm waiting for the evolution of the two wheeled or two tiller boat. When will we see a tiller on one quarter and wheel on the other?
