Call me old fashioned but I am thinking of replacing my current pedestal steering with a tiller. My boat is a 39' sloop about 7 tonnes, with light steering and she tracks well in all weathers so in theory it shouldn't cause a problem.

The benefits I see of doing so are more cockpit space, easier short handing as the sheet winches and cabin top winches are within reach of the tiller, and less things to go wrong while at sea (the current pedestal is wire based).

Just in the first flush of a bright idea so I am probably overlooking the downsides, so has anyone had any experience of doing the conversion and hence can fill me in on all the problems of doing it.
