What's wrong with my raymarine C70 Chartplotter

Hi everyone,

Any help would be appreciated.

It's happened a several times now and obviously just as I'm about to embark on a passage.

Basically, when I switch it on all I get is vertical multi-coloured lines on the screen and nothing else. No buttons work so I can't access or use the charts, radar or anything. switching it on and off, etc doesn't clear it. Next day I switch it on and it's OK but then a couple of weeks later it does the same. Now I feel I'm not really able to rely on it and wonder when I switch it on whether the fault is going to appear this time!

It's very frustrating as several times I've been about to embark on a night passage and having the radar and chart-plotter functions working properly are very comforting when sailing across shipping lanes.

I've tried to upload a picture of the screen but sadly it keeps failing to upload.

Any suggestions as to why it has his random fault will be gratefully received.

Thanks all.............

I had this same fault on a Raymarine 435i chartplotter, and the cause was the ribbon connector which attaches the circuit board to the LCD screen. I had to return it to Raymarine for repair.

I had similar, albeit not quite identical, symptoms on my C70. I emailed http://theservicecentre.eu, who said that corrosion of the analogue video PCB giving this sort of intermittent fault is fairly common. I sent it to them, they replaced the PCB, plotter has been fine since.

I think we've had this issue on the forum previously and the ribbon cable was the suspect. You may well be able to re-seat it yourself.

Mm, interesting. As I say, my symptoms weren't quite the same - fuzzy horizontal streaks rather than vertical lines. So maybe it is indeed just a loose cable. If you're confident with such things it wouldn't hurt to open it up and have a look.

I have exactly the same with my C70 it's a connection problem behind the screen. I was told to place some pressure on the screen with a soft cloth for 20 or so seconds to reconnect the back of,the screen.
I have to say the above whilst not a permanent solution works, in fact it worked this very day.
One day I'll have to replace or repair it but its low on the list.
Good luck

I had this problem and found the fix was with the ribbon connector. Initially problem was fixed by pressing on the front of the screen but eventually I had to take the unit apart to allow access to the connector. This was relatively easy to do, involving removal of numerous tiny screws but it worked and the problem has not reoccurred since,

The post that helped me was from 2012, search under "screen"

Hi my C70 was doing the same thing and pressing right hand of screen solved the problem most of the time leading me to think that it was a 'dry joint' on the display panel itself. On Thursday I decided to open it up and have a look, very easy to come apart only caution is to keep an eye on the very small screws. Having opened it up and had a good look around the only action done by pressing screen is to push white connector on PCB on rear of screen into its connection on next layer of PCB. I could see no way of bringing these two tighter together without some form of MOD. I undid one small screw on PCB on rear of screen and inserted two layers of paper to raise it slightly and then screwed back down. Put back together again and it has fired up first time on Every occasion since. (10 times off and on in the last three days). Got to be worth a try as pressing home is only making matters worse over time. John

Hi, I've had the same issue for a few years, (on, off, press the screen, etc), has all been OK since the fix? ........... thanks

Ours was fixed for a while, but has since started to become unreliable again. So far it's always responded to a good press on the screen, but we're starting to think about replacing it with a modern unit.

The first post-fix moment of misbehaviour was last summer in very thick (barely see the bow) fog between the Isles Chaussey and St Malo. Had the screen-pressing not worked, leaving us without radar, we would have been in rather a dodgy position.
