What\'s wrong with Beneteau?

Despite my current admiration for Botnia Targas I am still on the look out for other possibles that would fit my criteria before I order and have found the Beneteau Ombrine 1001. Not that it was lost etc. . . .

Fits in with most of my criteria but although it has the option of open top or hardtop, it lacks the separate flybridge but makes up for it by having the two engines everyone says I must have.

The question is, it looks nice, seems very cheap and according to MBY is fab with huge double beds and (quote) a dinette the size of a Sunseeker Manhattan 74's and can do 34 knots from 2 170hp volvos, but I get the impression people seem to look down on Beneteau - a sort of maritime Vauxhall perhaps?

Are they any good? Seems like very good value for money and the boat comics seem to rate it, am I missing something?

I've had a look round one, can't afford it, but it looks to be a nice boat. Not seen many of them about bar a smaller one. Fair amount of room below yet still a sizable cockpit. Nice functional layout.

vibe i have heard is that the build is a bit thin like the sailing boats. also, original mby review of the 900 ombrine was not all complimentary i seem to remember. the seats outside are a bit silly but otherwise the cabin is pretty comfy. would like to see one in five years time. probably looks more robust than it really is.

Re: What\'s wrong with Beneteau?

the mby report showed concen over some of the fitting moving - and Ben showed the same concern, invited them over to the factory and got all the existing ones looked at from what I remember. mby reported further later and seemed happy that it was a one off.
I like these boats althought the mahogany is out of place and will get damaged on a boat that's well used.
I found a used 960HT in France and posted it recently for someone (but can't remember the thread)!
Funnily enought the thing that counted againt it for me is that I would rather have a large single engine - but I have said that before and the subject has been well aired!
Finally I would have thought the Antares 10.80 nearer to the Targa 31 really - again I like it a lot. Add the Rodman 11.20 and you have covered all my current favorites in the 90-130k range as a family, fishing having fun boat.

Have a look at the Astinor range as well. They're strong and can take a bashing (but then, I'm probably biased because I have one.)

One at our marina....owners less than impressed with persistent seawater leak presumed from bathing platform. When anyone looks there's no problem, engineer goes away & it leaks next time they're out at sea.

Yes, I quite like the look of it and it's huge inside - with the hardtop option it would be very usable all year round too.

I shall go and have a look at one to see if they are well enough built - the biggest advantage over the targa is that there are lots for sale secondhand - though of course that might simply be because they are crap and owners sell them quickly or because they sell lots - we shall see!

Re: What\'s wrong with Beneteau?

I took delivery of the smaller Ombrine 801 with KAD 300 last April. The boat has proved excellent over the past 8months and 90 hours use. Kis love it and with the Camper Canvas I had made its fine for all 5 of us to sleep on overnight.

I have not encountered any problems with build quality and the engine gives her a good turn of speed.

Dealer I brought from - Dickies of Swansea always helpful.
