Re: What\'s up with you lot.

I suppose the time of year must have something to do with it; Christmas is both time-consuming, expensive, alcoholic (for some), and the weather has been awful too. But if you are looking for a topic to exercise your grey matter, having recently bought a bilge-keel boat, and found the weather keel slams when heeled (or is it healed?- what was that about alcohol?) while I am beating to windward (where else would I beat?), does this mean that I have sacrificed seaworthyness? I will be looking for a slightly larger yacht as I have a deep-seated desire to sail across the Atlantic, and a Moody 27 with bilge keels I suspect would be impossible to insure for such a trip. But what would suit for someone who often sails single-handed. I realise that somebody has probably cross the pond in a bath tub, but I like a degree of comfort, especially during the subsequent cruise in the Caribean. In short what would be a good singlehander for occasional blue water cruising?

Re: A bit of slap and tickle

on the windward keel is not a problem of seaworthiness really. Many of the older bilgekeel designs did suffer. If you want to cross oceans in small boats you might as well carrying your risk yourself and trying for a bit of third party cover. Lets face it if you spend the proposed premiums on safety equipment and updating you'll get better value than insurance and if you have a big accident mid ocean insurance will not be your first concern.

A Vertue?

But, staying with bilge keelers, unless I am much mistaken, the boat with the most Atlantic crossings to its credit, until recently at any rate, is the Golden Hind 31 - and jolly comfortable too, if no racehorse.

My apologies.. I've just moved up into the Hills and now it's snowing and blowing a gale.. oh and I'm having to contend with solid fuel "central heating"... so my attentions have been a little distracted from my subversively non boaty tendancies..
