Crossing the pond late last year we saw this just as we got to the TSS.
Can you work out what is happening?

Looks like a large container ship in the centre and something very much smaller very much closer to the right, ( customs, pilot, fishing ?)

A large box boat would have the Bridge central or the 20,000 TEU would have the bridge about 1/3 aft + a smoke stack another 1/3 aft

Bulk carrier/tanker going North in the South-going lane, being chased by a patrol vessel?

Barge under long tow by tug.

I really dislike Sailorman at times

Indeed it was a big barge under a long tow.
From a distance I initially thought it was a tanker going the wrong way until I realised it was moving backwards.
Also what you can't see is the 1/4 mile tow with a marker being towed by the barge.
Must have been almost a 3/4 of a mile long in total.

It became obvious eventually but those previous 30 minutes or so were a little confusing.

Interesting -why would the tow be astern?

OK so I failed to challenge the master last time we'll try another tack.
Being a boat yardy type and currently in the process of buying a new travel hoist I smiled when seeing what they were using at a prominent yard last year and wondered why we were spending 100k when a bit of stick, a double block with a becket and a length of wire obviously suffices elsewhere.

Anyone care to guess where it is?

Bit of a thread drift - but how deep would the tow cable be in the centre? could you have sailed over it safely?
