Hi All,

I have uncovered this bit of kit that has been knocking around the bottom of the boat for some time and thought Id get it out and see if it worked. Does anyone know how to operate it? Its not clear how you position the compass rose to set the direction. Failing that can anyone point to a link for the manual or anything on how it works

We had an early Autohelm of a different model but it also had a compass. Operation consisted of setting the compass to the course required, which was roughly right, and I think that was about it. Care was needed when changing course since if you turned the compass to the left the boat would turn to starboard.

It is an old Autohelm 1000. You set the course you want it to steer by, by aligning the compass to a mark on the case.

i had one on a previous boat. It steered as good as a newer Raymarine 2000.

The case must be worn a bit as I coudnt find a mark anywhere! Is the mark in line with the "arm" or at 90deg ie down the centre line of the boat?

I cannot remember either.

I just switched it on, and rotated the compass knob until the tiller arm was near centre, then dropped the arm onto the rudder pin. From then on, I steered by rotating the knob, in the opposite direction that you would expect to rotate to steer - i.e rotate clockwise when altering course to port, and vise-versa for stbd.

For its age, it was quite a good little unit. It was on my boat for the 6 years that the boat was used for charter work.

Those things used to work quite well.

Mine still does! I need to stick the compass rose back on but it's not essential. Without the rose I need to fiddle with the compass until the arm is in the right place before attaching it to the tiller.

Thanks all, those are the manuals.

Still cant find the damn mark on the case!

I've an even older version that still works fine. I don't bother with the rose, if I need to change course I simply rotate the dial so that the forward part moves in the direction that I want the tiller to move.
