A pole 1.8m long and around 75mm diameter. It's not telescopic
It seems a little short and there is already a proper spinnaker pole that is a lot longer.2020-04-23 21.12.00.jpg

Also called whisker or bearing off pole. Used to move the spinnaker guy away from the shrouds when the spi is shy.

Can be used when gently running full and by, for the genoa to stop it collapsing and tangling round the forestay.

Pin end to the mast, sheave outboard

I did wonder if something like post #3 , just was not sure how it was meant to be attached since it would only protrude 125mm more than the beam of the boat from mast attachment, but now I understand.
Thank you .

I am not awfully happy with that description in the NauticEd site, OH. The pole in the picture is not secured fore and aft , and really should not be in contact with a shroud as the local load increases tension dramatically in a piece of rigging that is designed to be in a straight line.

The text is, err, complicated. " You can see from the schematic that the force to bring the pole back is more outboard than it would have been if the jockey pole was not in place. The more outward force provides more turning moment to the pole allowing it to come back. "

The jockey pole seems to be the wrong way round; it needs to be captive at the mast, not on the spi guy. The idea of a whisker/jockey pole flailing around loose on the guy does not appeal.

My pictured pole has nothing on the outboard end to secure it fore and aft.
I fully understand what you are saying though sarabande.
I can see why it can be called a reaching pole.

It may be a function of the size of the boat/pole. We certainly had to use fore and after guys on Admirals cup boats, an dmy whisker pole (32ft boat) has eyes for guys. They also prevent the pole from 'skying'.

What size is the boat? My whisker pole, which I use to pole out the genoa on my 30' boat, is approx 3 mtrs long. 1.8m seems very short.

The boat is 36 ft.. Am learning as this thread progresses..
So we have a jocky pole, reaching pole, whisker pole, spinaker pole, and they are not all the same !
I have a huge genoa, maybe over 180% so a pole to hold it out would have to be so long that it would not be feasable ?

What pray has your Genoa to do with a jockey pole.
have you done a Dazed Kipper course ???
Did they mention spinnakers as you showered £s upon them
