Hi Folks,

My furling line is starting to slip a bit through this gadget on my Beneteau 24. I want to replace the cam and the spring, but I can't read the maker's name anywhere on it. And actually I don't even really know what the thing is called. A cheek block with a jammer built in?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. If I can't refurb it I suppose I'll buy a new one, or something similar. But I'm open to helpful suggestions if there's something more fit for purpose. This seems to work ok, but if I let the jib our in one go, the line often snags on it's way through. No big deal, but there's room for improvement.

Thanks,

Simon.

Just fit a clutch - my favourite is Lewmar but other makes available. So easy, just pull the reefing line and it grabs instantly - no messing trying to get it on a cleat etc.

Yes, that would work, but I still need the block for the furling line to go around, so it doesn't cross the deck. And if I'm going to use this gizmo as a block, I'd have to remove and dismantle it to take out the cam and spring. So it's better if I can identify it and replace those parts.

If you take it off and take it apart you be be able to either get a new spring or even make a new one by winding up some stainIess wire of correct gauge. I actually replaced mine with a spinlock clutch. In doing so I was also able to get a better routing of reefing line and it took out the 180degree bend so less friction and so easier to operate.

Thanks Dansaskip. I would do as you did i.e. re-routing the line to eliminate the 180º bend, but I can't see a way to do so without creating a trip hazard accross the side deck. I think I might dismantle the foot block and remove the spring and cam and locking lever turning it into a cheek block, then install a clutch to lock the line. pity the spares don't seem to be available. I prefer to re-condition things where possible. ho hum :) .

I fitted the clutch on the deck, then a single block behind it taking the reefing line to the cockpit. Only a 90° angle in my case with a brass half round strip on the coaming to prevent grooves in the grp as you pull.

Thanks. Yes, I'm going to do the same. It's a shame, because refurbing the existing block would be cheap and easy, but as I can't get the spares, your set up is the best way to resolve this.
