Marmalade doesn't have a holding tank. Does that mean I can't use the Dutch waterways or is it ok if we're on our honour not to discharge black water into the canals / lakes etc.

Do the Dutch check in some way?

just spent 5 1/2 week in the Netherlands with a porta potty just to be kosher & still unusedv in itss wrapper, have not seen any oficial at all, we use the lavac as the head basin is pumped through it, all done discreetly with no issues. we saw quite a few pump outs but those we saw using them was 2 or 3 .

We haven't seen anyone being checked but the Dutch probably assume that everyone will do the decent thing and not pollute the water.
Theee are thousands of boats and the water is very clean, the locals swim at every opportunity.
Don't confirm the belief that Englanders are the dirty nation.

a Dutchman told us the Ijsselmere was "too clean" & the fish were being depleted due to that fact, no food for the scavengers

No plans to sully the national reputation. Just don't want to get nicked for not having a holding tank. Boat was built before they were de rigeur. We never use the heads in marinas for anything but a night time wee - nothing pumped into the water that the birds and bees don't already put there!

To "be safe" we bought a new unused pp in a club jumble, it has now had a tour of The Netherlands ( Holland is only North & South Holland :encouragement it will go home still in its wrapper.

The Dutch have installed portaloo`s on every island,staging & swimplaats. there are 1000`s of them. The facilities for family boating puts us to shame,we have a lot to learn if we want new blood in boating in England. Most dont go far but its "the family", kids are free to do what they want ashore too, no fussing parents who thinks they will be abducted at the first opportunity It was a refreshing change to hear kids laughing,running about & exploring, all with other new friends. .

PS most Dutchmen know about a swift one in the Butt too. they know Pin Mill & have been or plan to go "sometime" its like "Im a sailor i have been to The Butt & Oyster"

The last time I was in the B and O, having trudged through the woods from Woolverstone, we (4 of us) were frankly very disappointed. Food was poor, one meal had to be sent back as overcooked, the replacement (Scampi) under cooked. The place looked dirty and run down, and then we had to trudge back through the woods. Maybe our expectations were more than they should have been... I can't comment on the beer as I drink Lager or Cider. I think serious complacency has set in.

I hope our Dutch visitors are not expecting too much

A Dutch friend said that many of their boats carry the flex-toilet bags ready to show if they are inspected.He suggested that they do not get much use and that no 1s are done in the usual way.No no 2s though.
I took a Porta Potti the last few times I went.May use the bags next time.

We also took a PP last time we went. But, just as there are apparently few pump-out stations, it was also not always easy to find places to empty the thing. Not all HM's like them emptied down the harbour loos.

On re-reading,my post may have sounded a bit harsh, wasn't meant to.
Peeing not a problem but dumping nr 2s would be considered anti social. We are currently on theGrevelingen, the water is crystal clear, kids swimming everywhere, all the time and people eat the mussels. Don't fancy that with a sewage side salad.
There are lots of free or cheap pump outs for holding tanks and the bigger marinas have chemical toilet points.
It's a super place for boating.

It's good to hear they have geared up more for pump-outs and chemical loos. I have not been there since 2011 (more's the pity) and they were certainly very few and far between then. It actually became a bit of a worry for us then trying to get the flippin thing emptied.

Re Dutch kids. My faith in humanity was a little restored yesterday in Scheveningen to see a group of three high-spirited girls aged twelve or less going round with fishing nets. They had scooped up all the plastic bottles and other detritus from the marina. What they have done to the marina is a subject for another thread.
