Yes Joe, Jamie Mountain, met some of his friends and family later. They had searched the river every day for 6 weeks.....

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

Back in the early seventies near Ryde Middle we found two boxes that had, I guess, been part of ships stores that went overboard. In one was a coffee pot with filters and the other contained packets of ground coffee.

A box of oranges.

A John Deere baseball cap (always wondered if it had done a transatlantic to get here).

A mega fender (too big for my cockpit lockers, so it's in the garden shed).

A vegetable sack (found that with my propellor)

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

my most useful find was a huge avon inflateable fender, about a metre and a half long, by a meter or so across, which came floating up river after the december storms. Does the job for my boat beautifully. Probably came up from our local marines base, but they haven't been up to claim it yet... I'm expecting a practise "raid" at any time ....

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

Mid Atlantic, I saw what looked like a very thin periscope 50 yds ahead of us, on going to investigate I realised it was a boat hook floating upright in the water. What makes it interesting is that I also realised it was ours and that it was beating us to St Lucia. The trade winds were late that year!!

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

A couple of our members found a severed head floating (just) off Lundy island 3 years ago. Reported it and it was recovered - never heard the end of it.

...... oh, and came across a dead whale in Biscay - smelt it before I saw it.
... and when I was in the trawlers off North Cape, left leg of an inflatable doll in the cod ends. ('least the bosun assured me it was the left leg /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

Semi submerged gas bottle, well it found me. & various other items. The best was a german tourist fast asleep on a lilo 3.5 mls off Torreveija who then insisted he was ok & set off sculling for the shore.

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

Various fenders
My brother found a large RIB off Jersey while enroute to Guersey in a force 7 he managed to pick it up after a hard struggle and then turned about and fought his way back to Jersey straight into wind, later the RIB was taken by the harbour master who returned it to the owner, no thanks at all from the owner, so he won't be doing that again!
Apparently it had been ripped off the davits of a very large boat and the skipper thought it too dangerous to recover it.

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

Many years ago, with the naievty of youth, I took my old Mirror dinghy well out to sea off Pevensey - no land in sight!. To my surprise out of the east came a large square-rigger heading west. What a great sight she was. To my amazement she altered course towards me and rather than head back to shore as I was about to do, I kept station until she approached and I was asked by the skipper of Lord Nelson what I was doing there!. I replied - 'Same as you' to many waves and cheers from crew. Top marks to the watch. Lovely serendipity.

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

I found a dog, Spaniel, three miles off Blackpool, it was swimming away from land and when I dragged it aboard it collaped exausted. When I had a look at it, I could see it was blind (no blind dog jokes please) it had a blue film over its eyes. I took it to the animal welfare place who informed me later that it had been claimed by a holidaymaker, so a happy ending. I also found a huge wooden ladder which I sold, a much better ending /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

" More worringly, I sometimes wonder how many WW2 mines are still lurking in the North Sea and Channel "

A few years ago I picked up a trawler's VHF message saying that it had one in its nets. In Biscay.

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

A gorgeous topless sailboarder where there was no wind and she was practically out of sight of land. Her gratitude knew no bounds as she thanked me....

and SWMBO......

Otherwise various encounters with whales both in the Med and in Brittany.

An orange practice torpedo.
A North Sails windsurfer's mast and sails.
A dinner table ( no cutlery etc.) with turned feet.
A sheet of plastic 6 meters x 1 meter X 4 mm

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

Minki? Whales and Dolphins alongside the boat off cornwall on the way to the Isles of Scilly. The whales gave us quite a shock.
Oh and a Crew hat. I wonder what happened to the owner and the boat

Re: What\'s The Most Interesting Thing You\'ve Found At Sea?

Gulf of Maine - a sailboat, with a chap in the bows waving cheerily at us. I waved back. He took his hat off and waved VERY cheerily. And the penny dropped! We went to see them - engine had died a couple of days before, no wind, drifting around. They didn't want a tow, but water and ciggies (sorry, no smokers on the boat). They got water, and we all went our ways.
