What\'s the biggest boat I can drive?

Without a commercial yachtmaster what's the biggest boat I can drive legally?

Is the limit length or displacement?

from RYA site
-------
Q In what circumstances do I need a qualification in the UK or on a red ensign vessel?

Pleasure yachts less than 80 GRT
No Certificate of Competence is required on board British Flag pleasure vessels

Pleasure yachts over 80 GRT and up to 200 GRT
Yachtmaster® Certificate of Competence as long as the vessel does not carry paying passengers or cargo.

Vessels under 24m in length used for sport or recreation on a commercial basis
Vessels used for sport or recreation on a commercial basis are subject to Merchant Shipping legislation. ‘Commercial basis’ can be thought of as a situation where money or reward is given to a person or persons providing the facility for others to get afloat. In effect, this encompasses a wide range of activities from trips round the bay to sailing tuition.

It is important to be very clear about the distinction between amateur or pleasure yachting and commercial operation because of the legal implications. The qualification you require depends on what size of vessel you will use and your area of operation. See the commercial endorsement page for details.

so it wd seem to be 80 tons. You are fine to buy that 80 foot predator cos it is only 40 tons.

Trouble is there are lots of pit falls like charges re as soon as you go within a certain distance of a port plus lots want to put a pilot aboard . Then there's the thingy re competant crew and all the rest. I was not sorry to part with Danbrit cos I knew it was going to cost every time. So have you found a new toy then and have you got to fetch the thing ?? if so goody goody give me a shout
Cheers

Ah, right, so, its 80 tons no cert or as I have yachtmaster its 200 tons, excellent news.

Am considering the liveaboard option, am comfortably on housing ladder, so figure rent house and live on a boat.

Have seen a nice bit steel tug! And another one but figure 115 feet a little toooo big...
