Just the normal accumulation of dust and grease and stuff over the years - engine compartment needs a pre-sale birthday.
Anything over and above hot soapy water?

Screwfic do a cleaner by No Nonsense, quite cheap, no odour and works a treat and I have tried quite a few over the years, its clear in colour and about £8 ish.

That is good stuff.
I use it to clean chain wax etc off motorbikes among other things.
I put it in an old trigger spray diluted about one part to two parts water.
A second spray with clean water for rinsing and a paintbrush to agitiate.

Another vote for gunk, assuming you can put up with the smell for a week after. Spray on, use an old paintbrush to work it into the grease and nooks then use a pumpup garden sprayer to flush off with water. The sprayer is easier to control just how much water you spray in places you dont want it. I used this method before repainting both engine and compartment. Paint stuck very well for 20 years.

I can't seem to get into that website to find Gunk but, if that is your field of expertise, I will not argue with you. If you say it has paraffin in it, so be it.

+1 for the Screwfix “ no nonsense”, cheap, does the job, easy to rinse off and doesn’t smell.

For the engine room mix of various oils, greases and dirt, a good kitchen cleaner spray will work well. I use Ecover Multi Surface spray, which is also great in the galley :)
