Hi

Can I seek some advice please. My Navman wind, depth and log instruments are playing up. Basically parts of the LED display don't fully illuminate so you get half of a 3 or a bit of a 8. Someone said it might be a battery charging issue but they appear to be fully loaded and anyway it still happens after a couple of hours of motoring. These instruments are only a couple of years old so I'm hoping they are not worn out already. Anyone know whats occuring?

Cheers.

Stuart

Have you tried speaking to the suppliers? Might be moisture in the wiring?

What you are refering to is actually liquid crystal, or LCD, while this is semantics to you it is a whole world of difference in operation.

It sounds like a knackered display unfortunately and generally speaking will require replacement. You may get lucky if it is just 'sticky', in that a few gentle taps (flick with finger, that should get a few google hits!) might bring it back, but it will most likely fail again in the near future.

I will not be so arrogant to suggest it couldn't be power related, electrikonicky stuff has often broken laid down rules and norms to confuse me. Before going nuts, take it home and dry it out in a warm place, you never know!. It drying out works, remake all solder joints and go to town painting the internals with silicon seal. If not, you should be able to get a new screen from navman, these are hopefully (it is cheaper for the manufacture) a plug in to the circuit board, either by pins or ribbon. If you are not able to solder the LCD replacement you may be better sending it away (LCDs don't like too much heat so skill is required, as well as a decent (not £10 jobby from the market) soldering iron and tools).

hope this helps.

There is a well documented issue with Navman 3100 series instruments due to a duff batch of LCD displays. I am now on my 3rd set supplied FOC by Navman or what ever they are called now (Ah - Northstar I believe)as each set failed before the end of the 2 year warranty. The last set they sent me was a slightly different model so should last a bit longer!!
Many other forumites have reported similar failures.

Try a forum search for "Navman"

Same thing here, bit of a problem as I dont know how old the kit is and don't have an invoice:(

Navico have suggested I send head to;

The Service Centre
Maritime House
Ryan Business Centre
Sanford Lane
Wareham
BH20 4DX

01929 554503

Who it is alleged will repair or offer upgrade to Northstar equiv.

Not a real issue at present as I can still display coherent speed or depth on the lower display.(not both at the same time).

What I will probably do is limp along until it finally packs up and then replace with tacktic gear.

fixing LCD

Hi

The problem may be damp in the ribbon cable connectors inside the unit.

I have been able to get them back to life by putting them on the home central heating boiler in the warm dry air for a couple of weeks. If it works seal it up with clear sealant and it might give you a year or so extra life.

Good luck

nothing much to add that hasn't been said already.

my car stereo behaves that same when humidity rises.
Its dampness due to poorly sealed casings. Overtightening (or uneven tightening) the fixings when mounting can be the root cause on the better quality units. some have poor sealing new out of the box.

drying out and resealing can save if you're outside the warranty.
I'd have a look inside for salt deposits & wash the circuit board & connectors with ethanol & toothbrush/cotton tip - not much you can do with the LCD itself other than replace.

all our Navman instruments (3100 series) failed within 12 months -same problem as you - theyre just ****! Wish we had never bought them!

Now on boat, and the auto-helm is showing fallout on LCD display as well:mad:.
The lower display on the log/depth has also gone tits up, so thats plan "a" out the window.

*******s, now sitting doing cost analysis on replacing the whole bloody lot, if any forumites have any spare cash, all contributions will be acknowledged and welcome.:):),

If somebody doesn't sort out the swear filter to allow words that are in everyday usage and have been used without *****'s on the front page of the Telegraph, I will be forced to go up to IPC towers and set about the system with an axe.
