I've posted this on mobo's and thought I'd ask on here.

How did you come up with a name for your boat? assuming you did name it.

Having seperated from my wife and finding myself able to do the things I want:D I decided to buy a boat. Although I haven't found one yet I have decided on the name:

SUBSTITUTE
Force x

(for sex);)

or maybe not.

Well, I named my sailing boat "Calonamas", thats after my 3 sons:

CALlum
jONAthan
thoMAS

My small mobo is a different matter, I let my 2 eldest kids name it when they were 3 and 6. NEVER say they can name it whatever they want! It's named "The Bogey Hoaker". When they came up with it my wife and I nearly fell about laughing and the name stuck.

I get the odd strange look when marina staff ask me the name of the boat, usually followed by laughter.

When I shared a knackered old International 14 in the 1980's we painted her yellow and called her 'Cowards Way'...

I was tempted to call my Osprey 'Shy Talk' but found it had been done before !

Not the big boat, or even the tender but a rather scruffy FRP rowing boat. I was threatened with a kick in the knackers if I brought another boat home. That was 2 boats ago. I least I can't be kicked in the knackers for a 3rd time!

My boat was already called Progress when I bought it. Seems to have had that name from new going by the paperwork that I have. Obviously the original owner though getting a Leisure 23 was progressing in the right direction.

I couldn't be faffed to change it, so Progress it stays, altho since buying it getting it up to scratch and the way I want things has been slow progress.....

The dinghy just purchased for the tender will be called Amy. She's my youngest and I've always reffered to her as "Little One". So the lttle tender will be named Amy. I don't normally bother naming tenders but to get a a Harbour Dues disc it needs a name!

We have always renamed our boats, the previous owner from new had called her Mithrill 3, clearly his line of names. Keeping the Tolkin theme we decided on Galadriel. As much as anything because Galadriel is queen of the Elves, and seeing we are usually 'away with the fairies' thought it quite fitting.

Our boat has had the same name since she was launched in 1981. The model for Millais' famous painting 'Cherry Ripe' was eventually the grandmother-in-law of the gentleman who fitted out the boat, which he was able to afford to do thanks to her legacy to his family. 'Cherry Ripe' was named in her honour as it were and it's such a delightful story we decided to keep the name.

The boat I have now was originally called "Unruly Sunne", googling has shown it is a reference to the sun in a poem.
It was last owned by a syndicate, and they changed the name to "Almada".
The lady, who finalised the deal with me was called Maggie, on board I found an old radio license in the name of David so, who was the third person, an Alan, Albert, Alfonso, or maybe a woman?

I decided that if I was to buy a French boat, I'd give her a French name. As a family we've taken our holidays in the French region of Cher, which translates as expensive. During the past two years while looking for our new boat, our budget kept on raising so that when we finally decided on a boat, it was way over our original budget therefore we named her Trop Cher (Too Expensive)

A friend at university wanted to call his boat

Throbbing erection.

Main reason was that it would give the opportunity to use lines like " I have a 35 foot throbbing erection" or " I had 3 young ladies on my throbbing erection for a whole week"

Would love to know if he ever did!!!!

Thanks - that makes it a little clearer. I had wondered a she certainly doesn't look like a ripe cherry! (For those not local, Cherry Ripe has a bit of a green theme going)

Our boat is called Pitteral, a name I like. However I feel like a pretentious **** when I explain the name (usually backed up by the person asking about the name giving that look you give when speaking to a pretentious ****)

My son's racing dinghy was called Damp Flaps.
I thought it referred to the transom drain flaps, but apparently it had another meaning which teenagers understood.

I bought a J 24 and was in a very hectic process of trying to get it ready for my first event and my 2 boys were "helping" by inquiring, why are you doing that, what is that for, why is that like that that, etc. etc.
eventually one of the boys turned to the other and said, Jus B Coz.
It stuck:)
