Me and my co-skippers use it regularly to contact each-other in the Greek islands however, I've not tried it in the canaries.
From memory, I think 3G wasn't bad in the canaries when I sailed there but generally once you have some sort of coverage you should find it works fine.
It's a smashing app tbh and I'm
Surprised more aren't using it.

Go to the Canaries quite often, tried "Viber" for free calls and texts but pretty useless.Anyone had experience of "Whats App"?

What app seems good for "texting" but depends on where you are...

I have not tried Vibre depending on your phone/ computer I find it varies from place to place in the past I have used:
Fring,
Kik Messenger,
What App,
Google Talk,
MSN Messenger,
Skype,
Ebuddy,
Facebook,
GaduGadu

I think that's all!
All have there pros and cons I find it varies from one place to the next, particularly when internet is patchy.

Quite often a conversation with my partner starts with RU here? Here? Here? round various apps till one says hello! It is surprising how different area have different speeds for each app. Although that might be less so round europe.

As a whole if you can keep your coms through messages on these apps it costs VERY little to communicate with local sim card and a data bundle.

As soon as you start web browsing your credit will not last long..

Cannot comment specification on locations, but I was using WhatsApp until I found many more of my contacts are using Viber. mainly for texts it is good.

All these apps of course use your data plan so make sure you understand your international roaming charges or you may find you have a big bill. Best way is to have wifi on in ports and find local free wifi connections and use their data.
