What\'s a microwave worth?

The Southerly 35RS test in Jan's YM includes some option prices. You can get a microwave oven in the Southerly for £2814. Call me a cheapskate, but isn't that a wee bit expensive?

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

Are the £30 ASDA ones stainless steel?

Costco had stainless steel microwave ovens complete with rotisserie etc for £29 a few weeks ago.

In my books, for 2K they can stuff their microwave where the sun don't shine - I can think of other "toys" I could spend the 2K on.

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

I was thinking of knocking my boat about a bit and putting in a mains microwave and an armchair. Reckon it should all come to about £100, as you can get a microwave for about £40 these days.

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

We've just bought a Panasonic stainless steel microwave, oven, grill all singing all dancing cooking machine for just over £200. We got it from Currys

Re:The Lovely Pauline

Well, you paid too much, if you went for the compact it would heve been £169, and fitted your boat / kitchen better.

If you had found that the consistently misdescribed their goods, you could have negotiated a lesser price. SWMBO said she would never use the Oven / Grill; now it's a delight.

It makes me rant a lot that the two Giant electrical retailers don't give a **Kim** for their customers and consistently put **poo** info on their website (as their staff don't know zilch, where else do peeps go??). So If I feel compromised in my purchases 'cos of them, then I get my money's worth. Suggest others do likewise.

Shades of Mr. Ratner's "rubbish".

Sorry for rant.

Time for consumer to rebel where it hurts.

Back to the topic, you need girt big invertor and battery bank to power one of the above toys.

Just thought I'd stick my head up for today's post.

Season's Greetings,

Re:The Lovely Pauline

I didn't want the compact one. There is no oven on this boat, so we needed it to be full sized. Its a great cooker. Can't fault it, or the price. As for the power, we have a large generator which runs everything on the boat (we have no gas at all) if needed, but normally we are plugged into shore power

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

Bought a Samsung 12V microwave for about £260 earlier this year.

Don't remember where, was a site that sells kit for campervans.

Mrs Yanita's not the keenest of sailors (seasickness) and I'm not the keenest of cooks. This thing is one of my wiser choices of kit to put on the boat. At least that's what she says.

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

Does that price for the microwave as an extra include the inverter and AC distribution to run it or does the boat come from the builder with an inverter as standard fit?

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

One of the reasons a microwave is a no-no on aircraft is that it screws up the navigation/autopilot /control signals through electromagnetic interference. Has anyone experienced this on the boat systems?

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

Perhaps it includes a genset to run it !! (or additional 12v batteries/inverters and all). Still a rediculous sum if it's solely for a microwave. We had one on the mobo by the way, and running off the onboard genny, it was very good to have.

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

bet some boat manufacturers are installing these stainless steel ones and i bet they are just like most 'marine' equipment- held together with no-stainless screws, connected with brass terminals and unshielded against moisture.

i can think of one good use for a microwave on a boat - rig the cutout switch to allow it to operate with the door open then fire it up when shipping is around. it should make a good sized radar signature!

Re: What\'s a microwave worth?

The value of a microwave to the boating user will depend upon whether he/she has been on the course and obtained the correct qualification. Be warned - if you are unable to operate this equipment on land to a satisfactory standard the results on board could be catastrophic. Never operate complex machinery if you are unskilled and always seek professional assistance if you are unsure of the procedures.

I suppose the only good news is that if HWMBO wants his take-away curry reheated in the m/wave he has to do it himself. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
