What's a Hylas

Sorry about the huge picture. I reduced it to a 600 x 450 thumbnail, but somehow it posted expanded back to original size, with detail lost. Not too sure that is a CQR though.

UUUUAAAAFFFF, posting images like that and not being able to make the difference between a CQR and a Delta!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

VERY INTERESTING TO SEE THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT WISE ENOUGH TO TALK ABOUT TECHNICAL THINGS HAVE THE ONLY DEFENSE TO MAKE PERSONAL ATTACKS. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BUT DYNAUSORUS WILL SOON DISAPPEAR.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I’VE BEEN FIGHTING WITH NEW IDEAS SINCE NOW 10 YEARS.. AND I’M PLANNING TO CONTINUE TO DO IT, DYNAUSORUS OR NOT.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

SOME OF MY ORIGINAL CONCEPTS ARE NOW FULLY ADMITTED BY “OPEN-MINDED” PEOPLE.. AND BY EXPERIENCE I KNOW THAT DYNAUSORUS DOESN’T HAVE A BRAIN DEVELOPED ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND THEM.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

THEY ONLY CAN CRY WITH THE PACK.. BUT THE CARAVAN WILL STILL CONTINUE..

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Hylas, y original post was tongue in cheek. FWIW I respect your contributions as do most of the knowledeable folks I know. However please can we still take the mickey out those we love?

Re: What\'s a Hylas

My major criticism is the racist nature of his anchor, why did he have to call it a spade?

Godot, you have to figure out that I've never been rich enough to learn English at school..

I try my best to understand and to speak your language but:
- I don't understand everything.. like these previous expressions
- when answering a post, I'm not able to use all "nuances" you all are using, perhaps one reason why my answers seems to be sometime crude..
- and also in every languages I speak.. I'm used to call a spade a spade!.

good on you becky - totally agree

Come on guys. He did a lot of work with the art/method of anchoring, and his design, the Spade, is pretty good.

I don't say this because HWMBO is TOTALLY sold on them.

Even bought me an aluminium one I can actually pick up!!!

He does contribute quite a lot to any thread on anchoring, and he does know his stuff.

Nobody complains about the Headmistress, and she owns a company that produces lots of equipment related to marine loos.

Just think about it: if you designed something nautical, wouldn't you be proud about it?

And wouldn't you feel competent to answer any thread that was based on your knowledge?

I think we should encourage the 'experts' on this forum; it heightens the quality of knowledge available to the rest of us.

Re: What\'s a Hylas

I haven't even seen a SPADE anchor let alone tried one, so I make no criticism of his product or his ability to design that product. What I do have a problem with is his blatant self-advertising. Also his credibility is damaged (in the opinion of someone who has been involved in anchoring everything from dinghies to oilrigs and supertankers) by his constant bleating that chain makes no contribution to the holding power of an anchor. That's why I normally never post on any anchoring threads. Life's too short for unnecessary arguing. All IMHO of course.

Re: What\'s a Hylas

I also agree with Becky. Whatever the merits or otherwise of the new generation anchors, a lot of work and research has gone into their design and I value the knowledge that Hylas has gained through his experience

He has also pointed out that English is not his first language, so that puts him at a disadvantage. I wish my French was as good as his English!

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Please help me.

I believe Hylas has told all of us on several occasions that he no longer has any commercial interest in the Spade anchor. In the circumstances why are his comments seen as 'blatant self advertising'?

Both you and BrendanS refer to this so - what have I missed?

By the way, this isn't a 'flame thrower'! I just want to understand why two regulars are annoyed about commercial interests that don't seem to be there.

Cheers, (hopefully)

Bob

Re: What\'s a Hylas

He may no longer have an interest in the anchor, but through most of his time posting here, he did. He's now promoting a book he has authored in the Book section

Hi Bob..

Fully right .. I have sold everything to a new owner.. I'm retired now and traveling around south America.. going towards the Bodegas (wine caves) of Mendoza.. a GREAT wine place in Argentina.. with very good wines, at least as good (or even beter?) than French wines..

I still have interest in the anchor field, as my new book "The complete anchoring handbook' will soon be launched.. I'm working on the italian Version and next the Brasilian one..

But I don't have any more - financial, commercial, marketing, ***ing interest with any anchor manufacturer or distributor..

THE MAIN probleme is elsewhere.. a certain category of participants to this forum doesn't accept my theories (practice and experience..) not only about anchors but also about anchoring techniques.. such as the fact that the weight of the chain has nearly no effect on the holding, that the catenary of the chain is useless with strong winds, and much more..

As these people doesn't have enough knowledge to answer my theories, their only possiblity is to pretend that my comments are biaised.. or to make personal attacks (see the thread What a HYLAS)..

Since I started to defend my theories, I have been used to this kind of low level attacks.. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif but I'm pleased to see that there are more and more accepted..

it's just a question of ten years more, and these people will then be proud to pretend that they just invent them.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Thanks for that. Now I understand (I think).

Nevertheless the vitriol level and references to commercial self interest seem to have been at their greatest during the postings of the last few weeks - certainly after the commercial interest in anchor sales/manufacture have ceased.

Also the frustrations expressed by some have, on occasion, been quite specific, mistakenly, about self interest re anchor sales.

I take your point about the book though even if I can't identify with that as a cause for concern.

Thanks again though,

Bob

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Apologies Hylas, I started this as a light hearted thread to which you responded in kind ;-) I had no idea the carping critics would be so mean spirited. I for one value your knowledge and the thought provoking debate it initiates. Ignore the mean spirited, there are'nt many of them, thank goodness

Re: What\'s a Hylas

Many thanks GODOT for this short but very kind note.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I’m used of these carping critics..

- first its always difficult to talk about a subject where you are financially involved to, as most people behave that all your comments are commercially oriented.. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

- Fortunately now, as I’m not longer business involved in this field, I can more freely express my own opinions..

- And mostly it is always difficult to knock old concepts over, some people have been burned for that.. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif It is so difficult to fight against “traditionalists” who don’t have technical arguments to answer you.. that’s why it shortly turns to personal attacks.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
