Whatever happened to Burnham?

Yesterday was Quay Day here. Lots of stalls and entertainment on the Quay and Burnham was packed. MInd you the weather was great and that is what made it. Last year was a washout. I think that in the past Burnham was a major sailing week but is no longer in the same class as Cowes. Interesting that West Mersea had no spare moorings at all during their regatta - we called YC1 before we went over from Bradwell - whereas I am sure you could easily get a berth in Burnham. Maybe because with the decline in Burnham Week, Burnham is not such a nice place to sail to as a location on the Blackwater so as a cruising destination it has not got the same appeal.

Yes you could, plenty of space in BYH this weekend when we were there, although less than on previous visits. It looks as if the Swallowtail is under new ownership, as there is a big temporary sign talking about "Burnham Lighthouse" but with a dead URL on it...

Yes, the Swallowtail is under new management and promises to be open much more sensible hours. I have only been in there for a drink and haven't tried the food yet.

Burnham does seem to have more empty berths and moorings than it used to. I will say though I don't recognise the "stuffy yacht clubs" from earlier in this thread. I am an RCYC member and have only had warm friendly welcomes despite being, er, in a visibly non-traditional family relationship.
