Whatever happened to Burnham?

Someone mentioned to me today that the restaurant in Burnham Yacht Harbour has closed. Is this correct?

It's not closed, but it keeps very short and irregular opening hours. The people running it don't seem interested in running a marina bar, so when you wander off the pontoons at 8pm on a Saturday wanting a drink, it's closed, so you tend to find people sitting in drinking in their cockpits instead.

No I stand by what I said. Everything was done in the car park, including prize giving.

Did you go to an Optimist event?

I didn't do Otter Week this year, but I have helped out in previous years, including last year and can confirm that briefings, prize giving, etc. took place in the clubhouse.

The club is often full of children enjoying themselves. I've seen them meeting in the car park, the boat shed and the bar area - it seems to be wherever is the most expedient.

DoM: I'm sorry that you had the experience you speak of, but it's not one I recognise as being the norm. If you do decide to drop in, pm me. If I can, I'll meet you and buy you a beer..

I was only referring to 2 or 3 Optimist open meetings when children were discouraged from going into the bar area. I don't think this was a problem as most kids did not want to go into the club house anyway

I think my comment has got a bit out of proportion. I have raced in Burnham week several times and I have also visited the RCYC on other occasions and I have always felt welcome. Thanks for the offer of the beer

I'm afraid this is where we lost interest in most yacht clubs - wandering in as a visitor trying to figure out which unwritten rules we might unwittingly transgress and where we may or may not take our children. Can't be bothered with it all anymore.

Suspect very common problem in many boat clubs, probably due to the predominant age profile....... ie. mainly ancient.
Subliminal anti kid prejudice, resulting in couples with children becoming very reluctant to use premises due to general mutterings, especially among married members using clubhouse as some sort of second home or the single blokes who desperately need a refuge from their own spouses.:)
Those younger members with families are the clubs financial future, discourage them at your peril.

Burnham Marina charge £317 pmpa inc VAT

For me the extra cost of £170 is worth it for the better facilities and less time to get out of the river.

Agreed you save 90 mins on journey time , if you're heading out / in the river , but "better" facilities ? You sure ? , last time I visited BYH the ablutions were less than appealing , they are old and need a refurb plus dirty , even had to chase the HM for loo roll !!!

In contrast Fambridge marina loos are spot on .

They were refurbed this winter...

Bit unfair on the 'Mainly Ancient' generation.... My wife and myself are just short of being septagenarian and fairly tolerant. If we want peace and quiet we will choose somewhere appropriate. I think most will be OK with Kids in Pubs or Clubs or Restaurants provided they are under control. The French are pretty good at this, but in the UK parents are sometimes oblivious to the discomfort there 'Little Darlings' are causing.....

The new showers are really nice. Enough to tempt me 250m along the pontoon instead of using the one on my boat.

But last time I checked, a couple of weeks or so ago, still nowhere to sit on the cubicle. I need to sit to dry and dress the lower half cos I can't stand on my left leg

To be fair to Burnham, the only marina showers I've liked to dayse are Fambridge and Chichester marina (which really are the height of luxury!)

There are seats in the shower cubicles.
