Hi all, I am having a dileama at the moment. I currently have a fairline carrera with twin (nearly new) diesels. She is in a marina, in lovely condition and costing a fair amount per year to run & maintain.

I have been considering selling her now for some time and replacing her with a 5-6m rib. I would hope that a rib would be cheaper to run & maintain whilst still giving a good grin factor.

Both types of boat have their pros & cons in equal measures. Any thoughts to help me decide.....

The usual deciding factor is, will the ms' be happy on a boat with no shelter, heads, comfort etc... Ribs are great fun, but I wouldn't be able to convince my ms' it's the way forward, especially "out of season"... But then again there are plenty that will!

There you go.....no heads, being a bloke I hadnt even considered that. The Mrs dont like being cold either so I could be onto a loser!

I think what ribs are excellent at, is whizzing from A to B, piling on the thrills.
Problem is, what do you do when you get to B, other than get off the boat.
And start thinking of full wet weather clothing, as a basic norm!
Maybe your current boat actually performs more roles than you realise /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You could try sailing .. Were are a nice bunch really .. We keep our on a mooring during the summer and a marina for the winter .. 10m .. Costs about £750 a year .. If you sail everywhere its cheaper .. We also have heating .. Heads .. Galley .. Double berth .. and we have a clear view of the pub .. ( Ramsholt ) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can you keep the rib at home? Do you have the space.Do you have anything big enough to tow it with.
A decent rib/trailer could cost as much or more that your existing boat to buy.
If you do keep the boat at the marina they will charge you to park it,who is going to get it in/out the water if you do not have 4 x 4 to launch it?
If it is petrol it will could cost more to run and would have a more limited range than your existing boat, plus there will be the supermarket petrol "can can" everytime you need fuel unless you want to pay marina petrol prices.................
There must be a basic boat club somewhere near you to keep costs down on your Fairline , I visited one not a million miles away from you very recently,at which a club member was being charged about £30.00 a month for a 36 ft Powles
