say things like

offer then to remove the boat you want after pouiting out it is no doubt the biggest fire risk, for a figure well below what you offered last

Yes you all guessed correctly, B. Why would any salesbod change the habit of a lifetime? 10/10 go to the top of the class.

Q2 Part way there. I had actually given up on this deal until I saw the ad yesterday which awoke my killer instinct! Shall probably go and have a sniff around it this week-end although in the interim period some other boats that meet my requirements have worked their way into my shortlist but still have to be decided upon.

If it is this boat then I need to decide on the best opening line with the salesbod. Now I might bump into him at the show, if he doesn't fit tcm's description he will at least be wearing a badge, so I could start the process there. They have never seen me so could lose broad northern accent and start to talk with a few sweets in gob like pseudo yacht salesman and then take it from there.

Would wearing a blazer with cheque book hanging out of top pocket send signal that am a buyer? If I put a hanky on my head, tied at four corners think that they will feel superior:-))

You need a suit, a decent coat, a cigar for each stand, secent sunglasses, and a rolex. They will expect you to be quite rude, cos, for chrissakes, they are looking for people with more money than they have, hoepfuilly lots more money than they have, and all rich people are nasty like on the telly. Worked perfectly for me, much better than being pleasant and suchlike. Good luck!

Anybody you buy a new boat from you are going to have to get along with to ensure that warranty items get sorted smoothly.

In 1985 a certain purveyor of yachts offered to take my Morgan4./4 as the deposit but we didn't proceed as we saw a boat we liked better.

the boss hired the twerp. He must think the twerp is a good guy, not a twerp. The boss is even worse - even from daily contact he still can't see how useless this guy actually is. And note tha people doing a lousy job AREN'T clever people just seeing how lazy they can be and still get paid - they think they're doing a great job!

Back to the burning/shooting strategy, i think, and do us all a favour.

Not necessarily, I have hired people who at interview talk a good talk, and when they don't perform you give them a chance, sometimes they talk such a good talk that until someone brings something to your attention you may have an inkling but... If what is said is true why buy the boat afterall any follow up service is going to be questionable.

But, there should be some form of sales tracking and monitoring in a concern of this size. When I protested by email about the written terms received I got a complete non reply, so chased that up again and was told that everyone was at Cowes week. I just couldn't believe it until I went down anyway and the place was open but empty! Maybe receptionist was on the loo or something, but I had made an appointment to go. I would have thought, as someone else indicated, that they would have put a little more effort into moving this type of boat. It wasn't until twerp came back from his hols that he rang to explain that his spreadsheet must have made the price error!! (another load of twaddle) I gave him a chance to requote based upon a few niggles I'd spotted and on a delivered to Pwllheli in the water price. I also asked if he would do it with a 10% retention and balance cheque on delivery, "No we can't do that sir, we find people can be awkward" Ha bloody Ha I thought. Anyway he never came back with the price which is where we are at today. So I think on balance tcm has got it right that twerps employ and keep twerps theory applies here.

Will most definately give this a try, have got all the ingredients apart from the dosh, but they won't know that. I remember this tactic worked quite well when I first started out with SWMBO, only trouble is she is now nasty to me for some strange reason. Still I won't have to marry the broker.

but I don't quite see what the whinge is - by yacht broker standards you've been handled very efficiently - at least you managed to speak to them on the phone.

My best - a boat which hadn't had its bilges pumped before being brought ashore. And they worry about Iraq having toxic gas!

Don't forget they are charging the poor bloody owner by the week for letting it rot on their forecourt.

It's a pleasure Ken! Whole thing triggered by seeing the ad. This boat is theirs not some else's!

For extended entertainment I could tell the story of:

a) The new boat with a bilges full of water (very long story)
or
b) The nearly new bargain that had soft decks, complete with misleading info, deliberate lies, and slanderous remarks about surveyor, by broker.

both in the last few months, but I don't have the time:-))
