What would you check, change or refurbish on 11 year old, 1,250 hours D-12's?

Don't! The problem was the Azi, not anything else. The Freti will likely be much more sensibly wired. As I say, I have had a non working alternator on one engine for the last few months and it is well down my list of things to deal with
My Azi (39) has alternators wired so that port charges domestic and stbd engine batteries. Alternators also run engine tacho's too. Don't know of this is normal. So if the stbd alternator/batts fail, I think I would lose throttle/gearbox control. There does not appear a way of bridging the 2 battery sets, but if anyone knows better, then I would be delighted to hear.

I have only had a quick skim through this thread...but i did'nt see anyone recommend checking the boost pressure at WOT.....if the waste-gate is not correctly seated this will knock the power O/P down .....not sure how the WG is operated on a D12....most are operated by a diaphragm pot via a linkage.......might be worth having a look.

regards

SK

You will only loose your shift when the battery drops to 10v , a simple jump lead across the plus terminal will resolve this as a get you home .

Yep, must get some decent jump leads.

wouldn't a split charge diode work as a medium term solution then?
Yes I know it's not the type of spares you have lying around the e/r, I'm asking since I do have a spare split charge diode ;)

Mine also works like the Azi, port domestic, stbrd engines.

cheers

Possibly Vas. Need to work out where to wire one of these in. Meantime, jump leads provide a sensible back up.

And in the news today vw have been caught doing the same thing. Car detects it is under test and changes the emissions profile. Clever ... Until you get caught !

Considering history of EPA action in chasing offenders and punishing with punitive fines running into millions of $$, VW stupidity is breathtaking.

Consent Decrees.

'Most engine manufacturers were required to comply with the 2004 emission standards as early as from October 2002, 15 months ahead of the regulatory schedule. In October 1998, a series of court settlements were reached between the EPA, Department of Justice, California ARB and engine manufacturers—Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Volvo, Mack Trucks/Renault and Navistar—over the issue of high NOx emissions from heavy-duty diesel engines during certain driving modes. Since the early 1990’s, the manufacturers used engine control software that caused engines to switch to a more fuel efficient—but higher NOx—driving mode during steady highway cruising. The EPA considered this engine control strategy an illegal “emission defeat device”. The provisions of the consent decrees included:

Civil penalties for engine manufacturers and requirements to allocate funds for pollution research
Upgrading existing engines to lower NOx emissions.'

German carmaker Volkswagen has been ordered by US regulators to recall half a million cars because of a device that disguises pollution levels.

The "defeat device" allows cars to pass lab testing even though they actually emit 40 times the emissions standard.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been taking a more aggressive stance on car pollution and violations of the country's Clean Air Act.

The recall could cost the carmaker up to $18bn (£11.5bn).

It affects 2009-2014 Jettas, Beetles, Audi A3s and Golfs and 2014-2015 Passats.

"Using a defeat device in cars to evade clean air standards is illegal and a threat to public health," said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance.

The illegal system allowed cars to detect when they were undergoing smog emission test and lowered the rate of pollution. Those emission controls were then turned off during ordinary use.

The state of California which assisted in the investigation has also issued a notice of violation to Volkswagen.

In 2014 the EPA fined Korean automakers Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors $300m for misrepresenting the fuel economy in 1.2 million of their cars. That settlement is the highest to date.

VW stupidity is breathtaking.
Naah LS, I don't think so.
If my quarter of a century experience of dealing with Germans is anything to go by, I bet it's more a matter of arrogance and presumption, rather than stupidity.
Which is even worse, you might argue - and who am I to disagree? :)
