What would you call these shelves.

As far as I have ever heard the expression used in the UK cubby hole has invariably referred to a small often dark place.

My son called them "cubbies" when he was small. I kept the term and still use it - although you are free to borrow it if you like.

The main purpose is to tell the kids where items need to be placed so I might well take you up on that.

I suspect Cave Locker or simply Shelves is as close as we're going to get to a 'correct term'. Certainly at least one person (and company) has in the past called the one on the Sadler 32 that. However, that's too many syllables for my purposes - asking a 7yo to put the Mugs in the "Port Cave Locker" isn't going to work for me.

I like Bins for brevity, but it's ambiguous. I really don't want my Rolex placed in the wrong sort of bin. (Unlikely since I don't have a Rolex.)

"Shelves" works, but I already call the shelves over the Galley shelves.

Since you've road tested "Cubbies" and your boat didn't sink or catch fire I'll steal that from you, thanks. Naturally I will credit you every time I use the term.

Many thanks to everyone who offered a suggestion. ✔️

Not excluding under the stairs. I would agree, but to me a cubby-hole is just about large enough to get into, rather than just stuff things.

Now if you had said that in the 1st place...

Just christen each location with an arbitrary title based on something meaningful to sprogs, backed up with a sticker having the corresponding icon. Solved!

Nah. I'd rather use the correct term where a universally accepted correct term is available.

But yes, I'll be Dyno labelling them with "Port/Starboard Cubbies" and the things that live in them. From experience I know that magically leads to stress free order.
