What windlass to install

We have a Bavaria 38 with a Lofrans Caymen 1000 watt using 8mm chain. It uses the factory fitted cables to run on the domestic batteries with the relay box fitted in the electrical bay next to the chart table. The winch needs three cables ( up, down and common return) sized to cope with the current. Ours are about 50mm squared IIRC. In addition you'll need to run three lightweight control wires to the anchor locker or forecabin for the controller unless you decide to fit a wireless remote of ebay (we've had one for four years now, makes life very simple as you can run the winch from anywhere on the boat).

As Tranona says, have a look at the factory installations if you can, it'll help you design the "shelf" to fit the winch to.

I've only fitted a windlass to one Bavaria and the cables were already factory installed, which makes the add-on windlass installation price people quote, extortionate.

Any idea what vintage she was? Mine is 2000 build.

Did you build a platform in the anchor locker or was that also already ther?

It was around 5 - 6 years ago and the boat wasn't new so likely around early to mid 2000s, cable ends had to be broken out of gelwash on stbd side of locker.

Platform was already installed, IIRC like a large plate with 90 degree bend downwards at front end, open access underneath. Windlass was Lofrans horizontal, maybe a Kobra.

..Plus - windlass' are NOT cleats, take the overnight strain on a real cleat, preferably via a stretchy rope.

Indeed. One boat I worked on, he had torn the rear studs out of the windlass and bent the front ones about 45 degrees, had never heard of a snubber. That was a Bavaria as well and the mounting platform was certainly stronger than the windlass:)

The wiring may well be there. First thing to check is the control box wiring. The box is above the distribution board behind the switch panel. If the tails are there you may find it a bit of a squeeze fitting the box as the latest type has different fittings from the original (my boat is 2001). Seem to remember that the factory fit windlass cost little more than the retail price of the unit which suggests it was easy and quick to fit, although as with yours don't think all the standard boats had the platform. The standard control was wired to a plug in the anchor locker - not a good idea as it is very vulnerable. Rewired mine to a hand control on a lead coming out of the forehatch. Have a wireless remote as well.

When we bought Rampage she had a weedy 600 watt winch fitted which used a reversing controller and therefore only required two cables to power it. I cursed when we found this out when fitting the new winch after the original died in La Coruna. However, I found that the three required cables had been fitted during the build, which suggests that Bavaria fitted them as standard. The Lofrans control/relay box fitted into the space vacated by the original two cable relay box, the only problem being the need to fit a terminal to the up til then unused cable end.

The cables in our case terminated aft of the winch shelf, but most of the cable runs in the boat are led down the starboard side where feasible, so if cables are there, that's probably where they'll be.
