What were the marketing department smoking?

Have you ever BEEN to Dover ?

On recent regional TV local news programme the announcer was puffing the prospect of Dover being developed into a happening "hot spot", presumably for those still solvent after the next well overdue financial collapse. Shots of a local politician describing the planned development with its shops/cinema/marina side living were mixed with what appeared to be a promo from Lemans Bros and MDL possibly produced sometime during the 1980s. A sports boat whizzed around, crew with carefully correct attire and appeared to be whizzying past a coastline curiously more resembling Cala d Or .....than Dover.

Re: Have you ever BEEN to Dover ?

:) :) Oh dear no!

Now I have to be careful what I say because I've made a few promotional videos all be it in an amateur capacity, people in glass houses......

But on so many levels that was embarrassing. The poor lad hasn't got a pot to piss in, you know it, I know it. Did he get his end away? I presume so, he was probably topping up the escort's account on his laptop.

Since when do you have a uniformed crew for what is in the great scheme of things quite a small owner operated boat? Similarly why wouldn't you sleep on the boat?

Yes, the watch. Surely a ubiquitous Rolex would have been the go to choice.

Could the large motor yacht possibly be a 164 ft Overmarine? Might it be called Force India and might it actually be impounded, unable to leave the berth? If so not an ideal image to portray, come here and mingle with people who get stuff impounded.

The sexual connotations are revolting, the whole boating side is wrong to anyone that owns a boat and if you want to charter you will have crew on board to helm and look after you.

The ironic thing is that Ocean Village isn't a bad marina. We've used it a few times this season and they've been great. We've had some good meals including a lovely Sunday lunch in the hotel. The bar up top is a bit of a meat market, strangely interspersed with pensioners and families enjoying a cream tea.

A good product ruined.

Henry :)

What I think is quite clear is that no-one involved in the production of the video has the slightest understanding of the target consumer for the hotel or the marina. It was probably commissioned by a 23 year old marketing grad, and directed by their mate who is using their experience of instagram to profile the target consumer. It's abysmal plus they wasted a load of cash to make their brands look worse. All in my professional opinion of course!

As an alternative theory I was wondering if creative work had come from one of the crusty scuttlebutt posters as it seems to align with some of their preconceptions about motor boaters. ;)

What a sad lot of people posting. So easy to pick fault than do something constructive.
Cheer up its the boat show.

Ghastly video. I couldn't really understand what they were trying to promote. Is it really just the hotel?

I know it's bad form to comment about a person's appearance but he does look a bit of a cock doesn't he? I bet he wouldn't know how to change a drive trim relay!

That reminds me, "The Apprentice" should be back on the TV soon....

That’s what I was thinking.

I have been to the hotel bar a couple of times and found it to be very busy from early until late, can’t be that bad can it.

Stupid haircut <tick>
Designer stubble <tick>
Suit that doesn't fit <tick>
Sunglasses in shirt <tick>
Cheap, oversize watch <tick>
Punchable grin <tick>
No socks <tick>

Nope, looks fine to me :)

Funnily enough, I wasn't aware of that hotel but quite fancy staying there now! As they say, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I wasn’t until it was the suggested place for a meeting and been back since, this thread is certainly spreading the word.

I have never been one to be judgmental of others, I really couldn’t give a t*** what they look like or wear and why should it matter ? It doesn’t affect me in any way.

Huh? Remind me who said that the hotel is bad.
As I recall, all the negative comments so far were related to the video, not to the real thing.

IIRC, and without re-checking all previous comments, only henryf commented about the marina, and in a positive way - in spite of being clearly in the video criticizers camp. And fwiw, I have neither seen the marina nor the hotel in flesh, but I'm happy to believe your and henryf comments.

That doesn't change the video evaluation, though - in a sense, it's rather the opposite, i.e. the criticism towards the video can only be stronger, if the actual product/service behind it is actually good... :ambivalence:

Point is, the marketing people chose that look... it's really, really cringeworthy.

The idea is to promote the Platinum berthing option at MDL,s Ocean Village Marina.

A connection between Mdl and Harbour Hotels. I think the video reflects that very well.

There again I can see positive ideas not as some people here , only negative ones .

:).
:)

I trust you're being sarcastic? Despite the terrible casting, the terrible acting, the terrible edit, and all the other terrible things it completely FAILS to say anything about their offering. It's just a badly dressed man doing a very fake impression of how he thinks someone who owns a boat behaves. :banging head on wall emoji:

Were you involved with this in some way? :D
