What were the marketing department smoking?

Drifting off topic, but our LJ's were "useless because not worn" at the peak of the heatwave earlier this year.
They are on again, now.

What the ad says to me is , save money by not buying socks, pay for only half a haircut and you too can own a MOBO.

Have I got it about right?

I also wouldn't penalise the video for life jackets, it's a promotional video not a safety video. Style over function.

Of more concern is the fact I assumed the uniformed captain was something to do with boat charter not VIP berthing.

I still maintain that the age of the dude has a lot to do with people's dislike. What is he, 23, 25? Who other than a footballer (who wouldn't be working in an office / using a computer so often) or someone running a scam would be living that sort of lifestyle?

I understand the hotel bar does very well from the football players and it helps fuel the meat market element but my experience of the operation was that it was so much more and catered for a very wide demographic.

If budget was light all they had to do was ask. I would have helped out for a very modest fee on top of some berthing credit and a couple of roast dinners :) The roast beef in the Jetty restaurant is quite excellent !

Henry :)

Hi everyone, nice to meet you all, I'm the guy who created the film ;) (Plot twist I know!)

Its been quite entertaining reading through everyones comments, especially the strong opinions on some of them. I do take criticism on board of course so have read each and every comment. Unfortunately the film hasn’t pleased people on this forum which is a shame for myself to read especially as the usual consensus of my work is a very positive one. Film as you all know is an art form, a bit like a movie/painting/photograph, some will absolutely love it, some will absolutely hate it. Currently in other locations where the film has been posted, it's had an incredibly good response which is a far higher percentage of people that are commenting here.

I personally was set a brief and had an aim to show the connection between the Hotel and the Marina Platinum package. For some of you the ‘acting/script’ has come across too cheesy for you and outdated, fair enough. This kind of film with a younger generation wont appeal to everyone, but what I can say about the chap in the film to answer some of your thoughts on him.. he own’s the car, lives in a high end property and has multiple successful business’s. No he doesn’t own the boat, I'm confused as to why that matters because as most of you have pointed out, this is a film. He’s also a very well mannered guy and pleasant to get on with. The instant judgement on himself or what he wears, is really more of a representation about yourself more than anyone else. Two days before the shoot was to go ahead, the original male model who was of a older age had to pull out, the new model was good enough to clear his schedule for the day to step in, which saved us a lot of reorganising. He made a real effort and wanted to come across as a gentleman, good on him.

People commentating on the target audience I think are concentrating too much on the look and not what the package provides. This is reaching out to people who would like a premium experience on a berth, that being said, that may not appeal to everyone which isn’t a problem at all either. The look of the model isn’t at all supposed to offend anyone in the slightest, thats the absolute last thing any of us went out to achieve and I will hold my hands up and apologise if it has offended people because the film is aimed towards anyone who may be interested in the Platinum package and nothing to do with age or look.

It’s hard to please everyone and honestly a lot of the comments that I have read asking this and that, there is genuine and fair answers to. It’s easy to sit and have very judgemental views on a film, completely fair enough, everyone is entitled to an opinion and is right in their own way as opinion is subjective. What I can say though, is the film is purely aimed to bring attention to the new Platinum berths and the style of service one would receive. It’s a very exciting time with Ocean Village and its development, some people who are used to the norm don’t agree, but for many its a new and refreshing time.

I really do apologise to people who don’t like it and have completely taken the criticism on board, the film is continuing to have fantastic feedback else where so it can't be all bad eh!

So glad your father pointed out this thread to you.

I guess the only real proof of effectiveness will be if those empty 'P' berths at OV fill up.

I think the appearance of the model does matter because it may end up alienating your target market. I think the least you could have done is toned it down a little. Not that I'm anyone to pass comment on another man's dress sense.

The people here aren't all of your target market but most of us own boats, many in the Solent and some at MDL marinas. I suspect many of us are in our 40's / 50's / 60's so I'd be interested to know if you think there's a significant younger market that may be interested in the lifestyle / product you're trying to sell?

Anyhow, well done for sticking your head up above the parapet.

Hi Solent 1 and welcome to the forum, a landscape full of tiny hills and nemerous folk who are all too ready to die on them, for most any reason....

Personally - I felt that the video was fine, it gets he message across, it’s well edited and given the locale, the end product is shiny enough.

Critics having a problem with wrong watch, wrong boat, wrong smile, no socks, punchable face and revolting sexualisation are probably relics who’d do better sticking with their daily telegraph at home in Tunbridge Wells and staying off line.

Of course, if the budget allows you could take a plural approach to content and create a second video which resonates with the majority of contributors to this thread, you’ll just need to find a late middle age, balding male on the edge of Type 2 and their less than completely invested other half, tagging along despite rather wishing her husband would take up golf like a normal man; I’m available at a reasonable rate but you’ll need to supply the Tag Heuer :)

Well done for the post and don’t let the buggers get you down...

I bought my 37ft sports cruiser when I was 25 and i'm not a footballer. Does that make me a scammer??

My father? Not sure how you came to that conclusion as a friend of mine pointed this thread out to me. Are you hinting that you know of me? :D

Hi Solent1

Well done for sticking your head out the trench! I'm sure all of us can look back on certain things in their career and not be entirely satisfied with things we've done - I'm certainly in that camp. Hope you can take the comments on-board because I do think that many folks around here are the exact target market - I myself moored in OV for a number of years and I had no idea what the video was promoting - so if your core consumer doesn't understand it, then you are blowing off the majority of the potential that the video had. I would be interested to understand in what channels the video received a great reception. Also, from my experience, if the talent you have cast can't make it, reschedule because 2nd best will always be 2nd best. Also, sorry for rambling on, but the video was well shot - maybe you should do a 2nd, shorter cut, with supers. It will de-cheese the story and give the viewer the chance to buy into the proposition theby reading less into the shortcomings of Stan Laurel and his implausible day?

Good Luck!

Well done for coming forward to clear up a few doubts, I wouldn’t worry about the perfect few that have done nothing more than slate your add as they are not now or will most likely never be customers so no great loss here. It just proves that you can’t judge a book by its cover although many think they can.

+1, well done for coming forward. If what you produced is what the customer wanted then you have done a superb job. For me and I guess, many on here, it simply says, poser knobs use this product which I am sure is not representative of the majority of the clientele. I think the image portrayed misses much of a likely target market. I did consider marinas that were more expensive than the one I chose but this video would definitely be a turn off for me. Sorry!

I said it before, but I'll say it again, I don't care what the bloke in the ad was wearing/driving etc, but I don't understand what platinum berthing gives me, the ad gives me no info at all.

Non sequitur: making people judge a book by its cover is precisely what videos like these are aimed at.
As a consequence, you can't dismiss the views inspired by the video on this basis.

Just think about it: if you seriously think that it's a mistake to judge a book by its cover (a very respectable opinion indeed), you should criticize even the idea of making videos like this, regardless of how good or bad they are.
Let's assume that all comments were along the lines of "I can't wait to try this platinum berths thing": wouldn't it be a perfect example of a bunch of people judging a book by its cover, anyway?

All that aside, I can't for the life of me understand what doubts in your opinion were cleared up by solent1.
First of all, I had zero doubts/curiosities left after looking at the video: I just thought to have wasted a couple of mins.
And I have a funny feeling of not being alone.

But most importantly, solent1 wrote...

Now, if there's one thing that this self-contradicting, unsolicited and completely irrelevant explanation makes me think of, it's an old saying which I believe was translated in English as "of the beautiful silence, nobody wrote".

And if you don't understand why, just read the whole sentence more carefully, for how many times as necessary.
I'm sure that eventually you will! :encouragement:

No idea what platinum berthing is but maybe it's for Mobo? Anyway I have at least learnt that the restaurant at the hotel might be worth a try out when we are next at OV. I eagerly await the next vid promoting the RSYC facilities though. I did actually wonder if some ironic humour was intended by the production which others have missed ?

lesson two: marketing depts in UK are corrupted by stupid politicaly correct , as in France...
lesson three: multicultural marketing is hell and the beginning of decadence for our civilisation....
