What value do you put on pride of ownership

<<
I certainly couldn't afford to boat in England - unless I had a trailor sailor.>>
Then fuel costs a fortune! It's not all bad news John, you can still get a mudberth round here for £80 p.a.

Course you could afford the UK. We sail the Bristol Chanel, boat mooring at the club is free (and there are empty moorings) lift out £30 free winter storage, beer £1.30 per pint, no Sunsail flottilla boats, lots of nice empty places to visit in Eire, Cornwall, West Wales - I could go on but wont.

I can never understand why people have so little imagination as to stay in the overcrowded Solent pay silly marina prices and then moan about them. It can only be because they think others will be impressed by their ability to pay those silly prices.

Can anyone explain what other reason there might be?

The attraction of the Solent is a mystery to me as well.

The price of Diesel may go up and they're all up in arms, yet £5,200 p/a JUST TO PARK YOUR BOAT is all part of the course.

We're moving abroad in April - 1 year in a marina (38ft) £997, AND the price of red diesel isn't going up over there.
Ask me nicely, and I'll tell you where it is.

Yeah, the numbers can often hurt when expressed this way. Question - would things have been any better in terms of usage if you still had a stinkie?

I've always seemed to get tons of usage out of my boats - there has to be a good reason why any weekend during the season is not spent on the boat. Love it. But appreciate family commitments and other things can stop that. Currently in the joyful position of being able to sail to work and berth boat outside office - liveaboard during week and then sail home at weekend for more sailing if I want. Actually currently spending more time on boat than at home. Makes me wonder whether in my case I have the inverse situation and maybe the house ought to go..... Since acquiring AC in mid-Oct (say 2 months ago = 60 days) I estimate that I've spent around 20-25 days aboard and sailed c. 250nm just local pottering. Make that asset sweat, man!

Would we have had more usage if we were still "stinkies"? No, Rob, probably not - Mrs N could not pull/push/lift/jump (sorry, step) onto pontoon etc, and my back problem manifested itself by way of shutting down the nervous system in my left leg, which subsequently kept giving way! (a symptom more usually brought on by alcohol!) The only difference would be that the costs would have been a bit higher (double the amount of capital tied up).

As I said elsewhere, cost is not usually at the top of the agenda, and last season we spent as much time on board as we did at home. However, many folks regularly only use their boats a handful of times a year, so their daily costs, whilst out on the water are equally as high. It must "pride of ownership" that keeps them going, (or they are supremely wealthy), though having over the years, having looked a several second hand boats for sale, I must say pride of ownership was not greatly evident!!
