I would put it through a filter funnel to make sure there are no buggy bits in it and use it. Theoretically, if it has been kept with the cap tight, then there should be no probs using it, its not like petrol with "light ends" to evaporate and it will still be emminently useable. The filter is just a precaution to make sure that there was no condensation in the bidon to make "bugs"

I've "rediscovered" two 5 gallon plastic jerry cans. The diesel is probably 7-8 years old. Can it be used? Does it need to be tested or treated?

As Stu says - filter and use. If you are worried about bugs - then syphon off to another couple of cans - discarding the residue in bottom of original - there will be some whatever condition fuel is in. Add a few drops of favourite bug juice - cheapest stuff is good enough !! Leave if for couple of days - syphon back to original cans which have been swilled out with petrol or kero to clean ... then use.
My diesel VW stood in my garage for 7 years when I was working abroad. The fuel tank was full. On returning home it started first time and ran without problems.

If you're worried about its effects on your engine and you have any oil-fired central heating users where you live then sell it to one of them. Current 28 second c.h. oil price is 28 p. per litre and if it's dumped into a tank of good stuff the boiler won't notice.
Remember that the modern paper fuel filter is very efficiant and will stop anything that will cause abrasion to the engine,Hovever sticky stuff that can form in oldish diesel especially if any water/condensation has been present and can block the filter. As your previous adviser says, just filter it through a funnell with a fine mesh gause in the bottom.Yes 10 galls of deisel is far too much for starting the odd bonfire.Chris.
