read the thread on putting a floor in an old avon. that would be a good idea in mine which has no floor at the moment - just the hypalon skin. but how do i know what avon i've got? once i know i might be able to get a floor. of course i could always measure it but getting the dimensions for the floor off the avon spec would be more accurate.

it's an elderly avon and takes an outboard and 2 people happily - maybe a third at a push

What type. Round tail or solid transom. Pointed bow or blunt bow. What overall length

If round tail it's a Redstart ( 2.5 m, 3 person) or Redcrest ( 2.82 m, 4 person) or an Avon 7 (2.31 m, 3 person) which was originally a budget version of the Redstart.

( early redstart and redcrests had pointed bows, later ones blunt bows like the Avon 7)

If a solid transom then an early Rover although they appear to have all come withe ply floors .

Got some pages scanned from an oldish catalogue. Will post them when i can find then

Don't bother with a floor on an old type Avon. They were never very popular because they were a pain to fit, made the boat heavy and difficult to store. If you do want a boat with a floor buy a new one such as the Seago 2.3m roundtail with an air floor for a modest £350 or so and sell the Avon - probably get at least £100, maybe 150.

Later versions of the Redstart and Redcrest (???) had squared off bows like the Avon 7

I wonder if you can retro fit the slatted floor that many have...

The last time I went out in mine It felt as though it was going down, the front started folding back and the tubes were getting lower in the water - that made me row bloody quick to the boat as I was also carrying the GPS, PLB etc. I may have just not pumped it up enough in the first place as it didn't seem to go down further after 3 hours. We'll see on the return trip next weekend

It seems to be more noticeable on black Hypalon tubes. Blown up "hard enough" for a quick row, my Plastimo (grey) just feels soggy but do the same with the black Avom Redstart and once chilled by the water, it goes so soft it wraps around you! Much hilarity amongst the shore party as the dinghy chewed me up. I guess the material demands a higher pressure.

Rob.
