What safety flares should I have for coastal sailing

But the thread only mentions Coastal ... not specific location - so we would assume safety precautions are taken appropriately.
Ah yeah, some places inshore they sail incredible clear corpulent craft, so that even when asleep firing a ferocious flare would penetrate the beastly blackness and bring them forth from the land of nod.

Even in the Solent they have some largish motorboats driven by wazzed, sleepy geriatrics though don't they?
I'm sure I went there, and there was one around twice our length with glamourous gunmental sides, and glittering, chrome adorned, looked good for 30 knots on auto while snorting a line, chugging champers and banging a bouncy bimbo... All of which may diminish ones ability to keep watch...

I had thought the threat was from the fishermen of distraction, who lay their lines by the depths of night, never to raise their weary heads?

Where are you thinking?

Boring.

I just had a scoot through MGN280 to double check that I'm right in thinking that doesn't require any boats to carry white hand flares, and no, it doesn't.
However pilot boats are required to carry white parachute flares for MOB recovery, which is actually quite a good idea. Especially with their particular work.

So even amongst the incredible quantity of stuff that a category 0 vessel would require, white hand flares are not amongst them.

Torch is required of course:-
19.5 Searchlight
A vessel operating in Area Category 0, 1, 2 or 3 should be provided with an efficient fixed and/or portable searchlight suitable for use in man-overboard search and recovery operations.

Blimey ... talk about blinkered !!

Who said any regs required the carriage on a pleasure boat ? I cannot see any regulation either saying you have to a rudder ... sh** - I'll remove my rudder then.

To quote the regs about a Searchlight and to compare with a 'torch' - you really are pushing the limits ... have you seen the power put out by such searchlight ? AND its a beam defined light to illuminate the person in water ... not for warning or other use.

I think time has come to ignore you - seems pointless to try and educate you ...

I think you'll find steering requirements under the construction standards specifications.

9 Steering Gear, Rudder and Propeller Systems
9.1 Steering
9.1.1 A vessel should be provided with efficient means of steering.

I actually have one that complies.
