Decided to have a go at removing all of our ropes over this winter and replace with mousing lines.

I'm going to need a lot of rope as our mast is 18.5m.

I see Force 4 advertising 100m reels of 3mm as a mousing line at £15.95 a reel.

I'm try to avoid spending loads if I can avoid it.

Any suggestions as to type and cost of lines I could use would be welcome.

polypropylene draw string from a local builders merchant

Yes, a big reel of polypropylene is the cheapest and best, try to find a diameter that can't get caught in any gaps alongside sheeves, etc. Cut on the generous side and it should do you a few seasons, but be aware that the weather will eventually destroy it. You'll probably be able to get at least a 100m reel for the price of the 3mm option from the chandlers.

50ft hanks of nasty 6mm stuff from a pound shop proved more reliable than the 3mm 'proper' stuff.
