What Now Skip? WNS

In reality the first thing I'd probably do would be to start a blazing row which I would eventually lose in a jeweller's shop. The replacement anchor would prove to be small change after the peace offering.

In the unlikely event that I could actually keep my mouth shut and my eyebrows unraised, I would first hit the MOB button on the GPS, then find a couple of objects in transit to give me a back up to help locate the spot marked "X", then take the boat to a safe haven and come back via car or maybe the dinghy to make a fruitless search and then go to the chandlers on the way back to pick up the replacement anchor and 50m of new chain, the last link of which I should then make a point of securing to the boat by way of a line which could be cut in an emergency.

You need to sharpen up your act, bjb. Over the years, I've subtly managed to downgrade SWMBO's expectations of peace offerings from jewellery shop to posh restaurant meal to Tesco flowers. It can be done. Mind you, her peace offerings to me have been subtly downgraded too

Forget the bloody anchor, it's gone, neither of us are going to dive over the side for it, unless we're in crystal clear waters somewhere warm, (which we aren't, south coast based)

lesson learnt, make sure the new anchor and chain have the requisite bitter end tied to the end of the chain and more importantly, to the boat!

As bjb has already stated this is put in place so that you can cut yourself free in an emergency if required

water temp 16c on the weekend and visibility probably 1m...
Oops, sorry. I'm not used to think of such sea conditions - let alone cruising in them! :D
1m viz! Geez, that means you can't see your feet while floating!?! Not even in Northern Adriatic, with its sandy bottom...

See what you're missing? The Med is a rubbish cruising ground compared to the E Channel

Just to clarify...

There is no suggestion that SWMBO is responsible for the loss of the anchor -- She was lowering the anchor as requested, and the string either came undone or broke. It was "just one of those things". Not her fault.

I didnt like to say, dive down its only 5 metres! I would have done that where I live cos its warm and clear.
So what sort of nutter anchors a 45ft boat in 5 metres on an ebbing tide and saunters ashore for a pub lunch. I know the OP never mentioned tide, everyone else did!:)

just one of those things!!!! you have got to be kidding.:eek::eek: It was probably her fault that the chain never got that bit of string connecting it to the boat in the first place, if she didn't go on and on about how long it takes to wash the boat & why oh why whenever we go to the boat there are always jobs to be done!!! etc, etc, that chain would have been connected.

Don't let any rational thinking get in the way of a good barney!! ;)

And there's me thinking that WNS was supposed to be about real life situations? Jeez, you've never been married have you? Believe me, you take every oppurtunity to score points off her. Its an unwritten rule and the wife usually follows it far more assidiously than the husband.

yeah, rub it in why don't you! :D:D
Who, me? Naaah!
Ok, I'll apologise anyway, with some greetings from an 8m or so bottom! :D

but I still can't see the anchor??
Your wish is my command!
See at 1:18, though there's just the chain actually. Which is on topic anyway, after all!
There's also a small sole lying on the right of the chain, but I was already running out of air at that point, and the animal didn't move upon my arrival, so it's barely visible...

MapisM, I think you should be banned from posting this sort of thing, it really is just upsetting us UK boaters.. :(

.........If only I meant it, we like it really :):)

Brixham Harbour 29th June 2011 by MDL events pontoon - only about 2M, but you'd possibly be able make out the anchor in 5M depending on sea state? Not quite the Med, but shows progress as when I was nipper, I doubt you'd have been able to see the bottom in 5"...

Mike, I nearly fell for that! It was so credible, right up to the point where you mentioned her peace offerings to you...

hm, should be reading such threads carefully and regularly to avoid getting upset when my kids drag me to sandy beaches 20km from home with loads of ppl and other kids around, piss warm water, canoos, windsurfs, umbrellas to rent, et al.
OTOH, they whine when I drag them to a nice rocky beach 10mins from home with underground fresh water springs (nice, clear, clean and COOL waters!)

Life is tough in the Aegean as well as the Adriatic it seems :p
