What might I want to install at my future chart table?

Compared to our panel (a 1987 Maxi 999), the main things missing are fuel and water gauges and the display unit for the gas alarm. (Our fuel and water gauges are actually one gauge with a switch below). We've also a mains outlet from the shore power system (no inverter installed).

How about a screen showing the view of the deck astern of mast, from a masthead camera?

You'll know from the chart table, exactly why she's suddenly heeling, and what to yell up the companionway...

And you can replay ad nauseum, footage of your crew of vomiting veronicas, neglecting their duties.

Yep, good point, water gauge will be on there but I didn't mention it. Fuel gauge is going to a little panel by the companionway with assorted other enginey bits. Don't think I'll be putting a 240 volt socket on the panel, but there's one nearby.

Heh. I've put one of those on a panel before.

It ought to connect to a panel in the floor beside the chart table, which slides open electrically, revealing a screen showing a floodlit through-hull display...

...with gurgling water noises played in stereo...and maybe a "mayday, mayday" alert. Might prevent future pushing of buttons marked "Don't". :)

I love that you said quadraphonic at first and then presumably realised that it's not the 70s and changed it hoping no whippersnappers would take the mickey :D

Hmm...does that make you a whippersnapper? ;)

PS, prv, leave space for an 8-track, a great system I have aboard my Osprey!

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I did have a quadraphonic stereo when younger though so possibly not a whippersnapper :)

Interesting problem, rather adrift from Pete's original question...

...how should middle-aged or mature upstarts be addressed, by real Methuselahs? Perhaps as "Cricker-backers"? Or "Oohmeknee-ers"? :)

I still say the "Do Not Touch" button is a good plan...a pressurised system could squirt small but surprising amounts of water at the place where the button-presser's face must be...and a disembodied, loud, unemotional female voice would say "Keel-release initiated...twenty-five seconds to abandon ship".

Can you work a 240v outlet in/adjacent as well?

One 12v outlet is not enough IME but they don't have to be ' in yer face'

I have all the usual trips and a repeater but may I suggest at least 4 unused switches with ' future proofing' ?

My inverter I have on the base face of the chart table ie underneath .
Other usual stuff, bulkhead etc

I can't think why he'd need a 240v outlet at the chart table (he already said no laptop). The toaster and kettle shouldn't be anywhere near the charts in my opinion. Mine live in what I lovingly refer to as the galley, although in reality it's a locker with some power near it :) besides the toaster, kettle, laptop and heater I can't think of anything I use 240v for on a boat other than battery charging.

That's another one I consider "domestic" rather than "operational", and am therefore putting in the saloon. It's only a move of about 18", but it matters to my slightly OCD brain :)

Pete

Surely heating control should be in the master suite for cold mornings?

I installed two 240v outlets, one v near and one 'at' the chart table bulkhead.. I then went on to put in a 'ring main' totalling 6 plus water heater and charger..
And have two three way adaptors
Let's see. At the chart table ( which can be the office when on board) . Desktop , printer.. Recharge phone recharge bicycle lamp. Recharge other lamps. Recharge handheld VHF .. Liwwle pealights up the pillars
Pwetty desk lamp .. The trick is to future proof if space allows, perhaps .
Shame 240v outlets are so f'ugly.. The cool black ones are often coated mild steel( magnet test).

Do you still want a mini-Seatalk repeater? I have a made up one looking for a home.

Thanks - but the unexpected purchase of an ICS navtex (it was offered for £45 when the going rate on eBay is about £150) has removed the need for it. Sounds like the design has been popular with others though!
