What makes a perfect anchorage - as a visitor

Best anchorage?

A good solid pontoon that does not sink or wobble when you jump on it
No sharp edges
Easy access
No one rafting up
Electric connection
Hosepipe nearby with all the connections for the tap
Decent toilets & showers with in easy reach
No dogs
No kids
Pub
Aahh! total bliss
S..d that mudlark malarky
Just cannot understand why people want to wallow in mud like hippos
Or moor up lonely creeks with nothing to do
Then get filthy anchors on deck

Once did a fortnight in dad's Silhouette on the broads with my mate-- that was fun --mind you i was only 12 years old

Sounds more like living in a house than a boat!

You should try Orient Bay, St. Martin. Loadsa naked ladies! Also a beach bar and a restaurant to wine and dine as nature intended.
...

Yes, it's a lovely anchorage.

A couple of years ago, some time in January, the 2 of us took the boat to Newtown Creek on the I.O.W. We were the only boat there for 2 days and nights. Absolutely magical. Total mayhem on a Sunday lunchtime in the summer !

I don’t have any one ideal anchorage.

On occasions I like solitude, shelter, good holding and no bugs.
On others I like to be able to go ashore, go for a walk, find a nice pub or restaurant.
The Western Isles have many beautiful spots for wild life viewing peace and quiet.
Some with pubs, some without.
Anywhere North of Ardnamuruchan Point is usually quiet.
Phuldoran has the best of both, quite busy in summer though. A nice walk across the bridge over the Atlantic to the pub. Or stay and enjoy the solitude.

Montague harbor can be quite busy. I enjoy rowing over to the Bakery Boat with my daughter, bright and early to pick up fresh baked cinnamon buns for breakfast.

Or a lovely spot on the West Side of Vancouver Island where I’m all alone except for the wild life. I row ashore to collect a bucket of fresh oysters to barbecue for supper. The bugs. Who cares?

Stayed at Puldoran once, because apparently it would have been daft not to. Unfortunately another 20 (I am not exaggerating) boats had had the same idea.
Not really sure what all the fuss is about. On the outer islands all the anchorages look like that (or better), the difference being you usually have them to yourself! OK there are less pubs, if that sort of thing is important to you...

Isn't that a bit KTR?

going down to the solent.....

I want to make a series called winter in the solent - visiting those quiet places

ascotland is too far from home for me to winter sail - I need to grab some days when there is some decent light

leaving the boat ashore under a cover in a boat yard would drive me nuts

if she is in the solent I can sail through the winter

katie L will be ready for some tender loving care by then so a spell in the garden in the spring will do her no harm

then I plan to take her back up to Edinburgh in the spring of 2014 and pick up the journey from there

I like a scenic cove, with a beach, and some caves we can explore in the dinghy. Somewhere close by to buy an ice cream is a bonus. Sunshine helps too.

I can name my favourites, as the boat is now miles away:
Lulworth cove
Barafundle bay in Wales.

Least favourite was Studland bay - too many inconsiderate speedboats. Unlike Dylan, I don't think all motor boats are driven by Satan, but whizzing past an anchored yacht while they're loading a baby into the dinghy is pretty evil.

never thought that mobos are driven by Satan

never said that about mobos either

however....

it is certainly true....the pleasure of a peaceful anchorage being quietly enjoyed by a dozen yachts and mobos can be destroyed by a persistant prannet
