What makes a perfect anchorage - as a visitor

Now that's what makes this forum useful :)
My best so far was off Cassis S of F

swin ranger?

anyone mentioned Dandy Hole yet? NO, the water can't compete with the above. But if you want absolute protection in whatever the weather is throwing at you, and the feeling of quiet seclusion just a few miles from bustling Plymouth, this is a good contender.

There are lots of hidey holes like that on Uist. One of the best -with the "down a rabbit hole" sense of seclusion / safety is the Wizard Pool off Loch Skipport.

It was the same trip as the Mull photo, but the cloud was down to about 200ft, and it chucked it down all the way up the east side of the Uists. the grim side of west coast sailing...

A couple of miles east - Traigh Gheal.

I know it reasonably well, but only from the landward side - it's on the list! We've anchored at the other Traigh Gheal, ie David Balfour's Bay, as well as Knockvologan. Also been in Port nan Ron on standby for a motor boat than was stranded on a rock (refloated later). The Ross of Mull has some fabulous anchorages in reasonable conditions, but not for the faint hearted perhaps.

I reckon my ideal anchorage would be a bit like this

If only it is was less than an hour from boarding our boat on a Friday afternoon or two and a half from leaving work!

Trouble is it can get very crowded at August bank holiday.......

If you want to have a really noisy night you can always go to the pub

But that is over 3 hours away!:) and you might even have to put up with this sort of weather overnight.

Who said we had bad weather in 2012?

Thought long and hard about this as there are so many contenders, even when I think of one I change my mind later but at this moment I would go with Cala Teulera on Menorca. Adapted from our blog
Almost completely land locked, plenty of space to anchor in 4-5 metres and very sheltered and very peaceful with no houses or bars in sight. Has a great Fort, La Mola that overlooks this bay - it is huge! You'd never guess the scale of the place from outside. Built after the British left, it was considered state of the art in its time but was already out of date on completion as gun technology had moved on. Definitely worth a visit.

About 1/2 mile in a dinghy to Calasfonts, the port area of Es Castell. A very pretty place, sort of Greek with a Cornish influence. Again soaked in history, it still has quite a British feel. This is particularly apparent in the residential villas and bungalows with their manicured lawns and gardens

While the seafront bars (cut into the cliffs) are difficult to resist, it is still worth climbing up to the Club Nautico for an amazing value lunch and views over the harbour to watch the cruise liners coming in and out of Mahón.

just thinking about some of the best places I have anchored

good holding for starters

no insects

stuff to watch - either wildlife or local activity

I am not that bothered about good pubs and never interested in restaurants as I am too tight/impecunious

the ones I have enjoyed so far have been The Rocks on the Deben, Pyefleet on the Colne, Butley River

and almost anywhere on the Broads

Best anchorage?

A good solid pontoon that does not sink or wobble when you jump on it
No sharp edges
Easy access
No one rafting up
Electric connection
Hosepipe nearby with all the connections for the tap
Decent toilets & showers with in easy reach
No dogs
No kids
Pub
Aahh! total bliss
S..d that mudlark malarky
Just cannot understand why people want to wallow in mud like hippos
Or moor up lonely creeks with nothing to do
Then get filthy anchors on deck

Once did a fortnight in dad's Silhouette on the broads with my mate-- that was fun --mind you i was only 12 years old then

Actually i admit it -- i have done my stint in the Pyefleet & the walton backwaters & the Stour etc plus a couple of Scotland's lochs
Some mornings have been magical!! (I think it is that smell of bacon in the frying pan that does it)
Others diabolical!! But not to be missed
