Anyone know what this knot is?
I saw it whilst strolling the docks at a marina in Texas today -(I'm on holiday in the USA).
The boat had four lines all using the same knot.

My guess would be a cross between a bowline a half hitch a figure of 8 and some knot cowboys use to lasoe cows or lynch horse thiefs:D

It looks as if the knot tier is using a rolling hitch to make a loop that can be snugged up against the post but not open up. The two turns are crossed like a clove hitch which would not be normal in a rolling hitch.

What kind of boat was it attached too? My money is on a small stinker with big outboards and a gun rack.

seriously, if you take off the half-hitch, you are left with a bight and clove-hitch. It doesn't make any sense at all.

Have you tried to reproduce it? I can't. Is there another picture?

No I couldn't either. The round turn of the 'clove hitch' nearest to the post is the issue as I cant see how the turn is made.

I think there is an optical delusion, and the standing part coming in from right goes anticlock round the post, there is an extra turn hidden under the centre of the three turns....possibly

It looks like a buntline hitch, and the tail's then taken up with a half hitch through the bight.

The half-hitches are the wrong way round for a buntline hitch - the second one (that the tail leaves from) would be nearer the pole if it were.

agreed. As it shows, it doesn't make 'sense'.

I assume that no-one ties a hitch that tightens on itself round a post. So, that main loop must be 'locked'.

Can we send Salty J back over to take more pics ? :)

I've been trying for 20 mins to reproduce it without any 'hidden' bits, an can't do it.

Is there not just the glimp of another turn bottom right of the centre turn? This is peeing me off now.

Me thinks OP has a duty to goo back and take more photos. There is a loop there that appears to go to and come from know where, there might be some hidden bits we cannot see...

or admit he is a fast learner on photo shop... :D:D:D:D:D
