What is YM worth?

There are YM’s and YM’s.
One who doesn’t own/share/have unlimited access to a boat and maybe charters for one or two weeks a year, and if he is lucky crews on the odd delivery trip, doesn’t get the experience and familiarity of boat handling compared to someone (YM or not) who is out on the water nearly every weekend.

Maybe there should be a requirement to log x hours p.a. to keep the qualification valid.

Your right. There is a big difference between skippered miles where your arse is on the line, and "skippered miles" with someone to step in. Nearly all my miles 6000 had been as skipper before I did my YM practical .. however I did have my own boat and many people are not that fortunate. I do think that a qualification like YM should be challenging and I certainly found it so. But I'm afraid that dealing with traffic lanes is an experience issue .... both senses .. how to handle and secondly not getting too blasé
