Hi
Some time ago it was mentioned on a thread that the Dutch used to spray / apply a substance into the bilge areas of steel boats and barges as an anti- corrosion technique. Does anyone remember what this was please ?

I would take a guess at something like 'Fertan'. If you havnt come across this stuff its a bit like creosote for steel.

I understand that it is a synthesised version of the tanin that one gets in things like Oak which has properties that have long been recognised as preventative in slowing down the process of rusting.

I've used it and its good, its the sort of thing you use in 'slap it on' proportions an yet a little goes a long way.

Regards Nick

If you paint a bridge or some similar industrial structure, you blast first and then use epoxy . Available from industrial paint suppliers at a small fraction of the cost of the yottie stuff. And I can vouch that it is as hard as h**l and as tough as Maggie.

The Dutch? Probably a mixture of herrings and cheese.

I use Comma Wax seal on my steel boat, much better than Wax Oil as it "runs" better, wouldnt want to spray my bilges with it,bit messy,if you want to clean them.
