What is the English name for this one? And how to get it moving.

What do you call this one? Used for closing of doors, hatches etc.
Do you have any good tips for making the stuck ones move again? I had a go at this one with a gas burner and a sledgehammer. Got it moving again, and pressed it full of new grease, pushing out some old gunk. Is still very hard to move, so want to have another go.

I tried posting the poictures directly. But the uploader ran into some problems 3 times in a row.

Hatch Dogs, Door Dogs or just Dogs is what they tend to be called on water tight or weather tight doors.

They should be removable from the shaft as the seat can wear. The small pin in the side is a scroll pin, that is what is holding the Dog onto the shaft. Use a small diameter drift and tap that all the way through and the Dog will come off. I would do that before anymore bashing the shit out of them. Once off clean up, lube and reassemble with a new scroll pin, as they tend to compress and stay compressed. Scroll pins are low cost consumables, available on line.

Pretty much what I was going to say. I suspect the pin might be difficult to remove. I'd dismantle, rinse it out with diesel, clean it up and possibly lap it in with grinding paste if that was possible. Failing that I'd try to submerge it in diesel and leave it to soak as long as possible before rinsing with a jet of diesel, then dry and inject grease. I suspect that wouldn't be practical unless the hatch hinges downwards.

If the pin won't come out ..... then a drill same diameter of the handles hole used each side BUT not ALL WAY THROUGH ....

Drill each side so you maintain correct pin hole in the shaft and no error in being out of alignment.

Maybe an option but those types of pins are often made of a hardened material and are very difficult to drill and hard to keep central in the hole. At least in my experience. Worth a try though if they really won't knock out.

Or 'clips'.

We have similar dogs and similar issues - except I think ours are made from aluminium.

Are there any that are more reliable and better suited to the marine environment. You can redeem them - but they soon corrode again.

I could not help myself and wait until spring, so today I gave it a go. The pin were already gone. So just the allen settscrew in between axle and handle. Not that it was needed. The handle is like glued onto there. Heat and fresh grease have made it so that I can manage to move it around whitout using a pipe, but so far it wont come off. I have been going at it with a 2200W heat gun, maybe I should whip out the propane torch? I think Jamaica base oil will be my next trick.

Well what do you know. There actualy was a roll pin still in there! Managed to knock it out and off came the dog.
But the dog is not the problem here. It is somehow stuck in the mechanism behind it. I have no idea how to get to it.

Yeah I gave it a few thumps with a steel mallet, when that didnt work I held ny horses.
Nylon you say? I do have one of these at home. Heat should work also. Alumninum should take up heat faster than the axle steel I believe.
