A friend of mine whose greatest passion is sailing (he has a small yacht, about 30ft I think) is turning 40 in a few weeks and I'd like to get him a present related to sailing and yachting..but I could do with some help with ideas!

Please let me know what the best sailing-related present is that you've ever received, or what you would ideally like to get as present, related to sailing. Obviously it has to be something that all keen sailing would love to get (not just you)! Please be a specific as possible (i.e. make/model, if relevant)

Many thanks

How about a handsome barometer for the boat - provided he deosn't already have one.

P'rhaps like this:

We were given a delightful personalised present for our then new boat, of a set of towels with the boat's name embroidered on. There are firms that will do this.

Some artists offer doing a painting of a boat, from a photograph if you have that.

For that matter, a framed photo of the boat with her name engraved would be good.

I don't know your budget, but I really fancy one of the watches available now with GPS - I recently saw one for £89.00 - and a digital compass, Suunto make a good sailors' watch at about £200, without GPS though.

A Rugby style shirt with the boat name embroidered on is another idea ?

A personalized Leatherman, I was too tight to buy myself one but received one as a present, love it, I use it every time I am on the boat, quality, I thought it was such a good present I bought my best friend one.

I have a Husun Sextant and an antique chronometer watch in a gimballed box with a bridge box (into which the gimballed carrying box fits).
