I did a line full width every 3", a nick every 1", it's easy to see at a glance without counting. To mark it every cm seemed a bit OTT and more accurate than I needed.

I paid 99p a litre (from Morrissons white diesel), and I have had to put 30L in this year so far, I must try to sail more.

Sorry, my snide remark was not just unfunny and uncalled for, but hypocritical - whenever I call a marina, and they say "What length?" I reply "38 foot".

Just built a rope holder out of the top handle of a bog brush (which forms the base), a length of 25mm abs pipe and a rowlock fixed in the top so that the rowlock stands firmly about 3 ft above the end of the pontoon.

Then the permanent spring mooring rope is hooked into the rowlock as I leave together with the stern rope. Returning I can pick up both ropes as I gently drift into the berth, get the eyes onto the appropriate cleats and have the boat secure without leaving the side deck.

Not strictly "on the boat" but works well.

I bought a little toaster thingy from Millets

£3.50 - toast and marmalade for breakfast from my one ring burner

it is also great for heating up pies

with an upturned suacepan on it heats things right through

4) Cheap £9 radio from Tesco. Great for LW, etc.
5) Square frying pan from ikea.
6) Pot Noodle Horn - a free Horn from the aforementioned noodle people. Loud enough to get attention yet easy to stow and safe for the kids to use, rather than have them blast each other and me in the ear with an airhorn.

I have a 2 quid garden Solar light that is presently stuck in the handle socket of my windlass.

It's there purely for decorative purposes. It has 2 LED's in it powered by a single AA rechargeable battery. An On/Off switch in the top.

My boat sits at bottom of garden and has a reasonable amount of background light around it. I can still see that light clearly shining out during dark hours.

I agree that it falls far short of the ColReg req'ts ... but I am also sure that in use in an anchorage that most occasions it will be OK ... (I do have a bright ColReg intensity masthead anchor light for when necessary).

I do have another 3 solar garden lights as well !! Which I could stick in winch sockets ... hoist etc.

to really create a party atmosphere !!

Local supermarket has kiddies air-horns. Powered by compressed air canisters.

1.99 a pack. Canister is clip on and lasts ages ... the horn is loud enough that when I tested it inside house - ears were ringing for ages !!
