I found this at the bottom of a locker on Karouise and cannot work out what it is for.

There are two small lugs about 1/2 inch apart ao presumably for opening something - but what?

Any ideas?

looks like a filler plug of some sort - but why so long ? Is there one in a remote location on board ?

on my restoration project, I have a drain plug in the depths of the bilge. That would be a useful tool for undoing it, if I ever lose the transistorised oriental person of restricted growth, whom I employ for undoing things at a distance longer than my arms.

No ideas. But I can tell you how to find out what it's for.

Next time you go to sea - leave it ashore.

That was my thought process too! Trouble is for that very reason I am a terrible collector of stuff but lack the stowage space.

Rereading this post I have just remembered there is a previous owner of Karouise on the forum so he may know what it is for! I have sent him a PM.

Yep, branch MEO desig here, currently enjoying 20 degrees C in sunny greece. We're a little bit concerned about being in water less than 1000m deep when we get back, as well as having to work out tides again (mean spring range in Messolongi is about 250mm).

By the way, it looks a bit like a steam drench valve key:confused:

As a previous owner of Karouise, it looks vaguely familiar but nothing springs to mind immediately!

The most difficult to reach item on the boat is the bottom rudder bearing in the bottom of the bilge and that is MUCH further away then that piece of metal will reach. And anyway, that needs a spanner (PS here 'Lots' of extensions from a spanner set will reach if they don't all come apart first - I know, 'cause I had to try a couple of times to get it off!)

Trying to remember any of the other 'systems' or mechanicals on the boat that you might try and 'work' with it, nothing springs to mind. You're obviously looking for something with two holes in to 'twist' with the gizmo and probably in a bit of a hole too!

There was another owner between my tenure in charge and yours, so it probably rests with him. My suggestion is to put in a "safe" place ashore and then you can go through this whole exercise again in 20 years time!

Sorry not to be more helpful.

The object looks very similar to the wheel spanners we used to make up on ships in the Merchant Navy. The two prongs catch on the spokes of the valve wheel and the centre piece was often hollow to fit over the centre nut. The length allowed you to reach the awkwardly placed valves.
