What is it ?

Tread carefully, Dave:

I can't remember where I saw the story, but it was about a small boat who'd got lost off Liverpool somewhere, but found a nice big buoy to tie up to while they contacted the coastguard. Once the coastguard had double checked their description of the buoy, they recommended that they let it go immediately and drift away from it - it was a floating well-head or something similar, connected to the gas rigs in Morecambe Bay!

I can't find a link, sorry, but I'm sure I didn't imagine it.

They can be utilised as lateral marks by using can or conical shaped buoys. If so they must be passed as lateral marks:can (eg Port Hand going upstream) conical (Starboard Hand). These marks, if lit, show a yellow light at night which may flash in any rhythm.

That's intriguing - it must me an Australian peculiarity. In Canada, at least, the shape of a special buoy has no significance - see for yourselves: http://www.coast-guard.gc.ca/atn-aln/images/cansbk_e.jpg

Was it just inside Belgium's TTW? Anyone got a link to Belgian buoyage?
Windfarm theory supports my claim it's an ODAS.

I think there are probably all sorts of local variations.

I don't think it should be read that the shape always dictates the side you should pass, etc. I think it's more a case that when a special bouy is on or near the edge of a marked channel (as this example is) they endeavour to use the appropriate shape to save confusion.

At the end of the day they are all special bouys.

The RN use large yellow ones as their large ship mooring bouys whereas if you were to follow the Canadian card slavishly they would be white with a red top.
The ones used in the Solent as racing marks often have the sponsoring company's name in black on them
