I am thinking of upgrading the outboard on my rib. To do so I will have move the existing engine on. I have no idea what to ask. It is a Yamaha 150 2006 model with around a 1000 hours. Still runs fine, does not use oil between services and is pretty good on fuel economy. The only reason I am moving it on is that I have been offered a cracking deal on a new commercial version of the same engine.

Put it up on eBay, start the auction at 99p as his usually attracts more interest. Run for 10 days. Last hour usually gets more action. I have sold a smaller ob recently and it did really well on eBay. Not sure how legal or correct it is but you could always add the caveat of ' the item is being advertised elsewhere so to reserve the right to end the auction early'.

Doesn't really answer your question though does it..

small OB's do sell REALLY well on eBay.... but big OB's.. not so much. I would be careful about this route.

does this help with value? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-F150-2007-Four-stroke-Outboard-Boat-Speedboat-/261224101150?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3cd22b751e

Really dumb Q. Do big OBs have an engine hours counter on the OB? Is this digital, analogue? Or tied to the electronics on the dash?

What I'm basically asking is can you "clock it"?

No experience of these things but RIBs have always interested me as a "fun" boat vs all the hassle of getting a bigger boat out of the berth vs messing about for the 'avo is intriguing.

The hour meter is to be found deep in the engine management system. Displays on the digital tacho, but needs computer plugged in to read the full system.

I recently sold an '06 50HP ETEC OB through Ebay. The chap did not read the ad and expected me to help him lift the OB into his van, so I sold him the boat too! I also advertised on Boats and Outboards and got quite a few calls after the auction - in hindsight if I had the time I could probably have got a better price through the latter.

Lots of genuine European enquiries - Ireland and Holland were strong, both outlets give you exposure.
