Speak for yourself. I'm a marine grump. No-one ever visits my boat. I never visit anyone else's. Simples.

^ This is usually my experience. Boating seems to be fantastically unsocial. In 5 years of sailing I've never been invited on to another boat. Compared to the friendliness of surfing, I find boating a very lonely experience. Maybe I should get a bigger boat in order to look more 'serious'...?

Not at all. Just this weekend, our evening was greatly enlivened by a pair of 17' plywood Lysanders who snuck into the space between two much bigger moored (and empty) boats, across the midriver pontoon from us. Four blokes, a swarm of kids, a camping stove, crabbing lines, and singing. We now have a photo of my dad playing a pink ukelele, and he wished he'd brought his banjo with him.

If they'd been on a big boat, we'd probably have said "hello" and a brief chat and that would be that.
